China funded roofing project completed ahead of time

The two-million US dollar China-funded roofing restoration project on Barbuda has met and exceeded the target of 250 homes, just days before the June 30 deadline.

The initiative, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the government of Antigua and Barbuda, focused on repairing the roofs of houses that received minor and major damage, or those categorized between levels one and three.

This brings the total number of roofs fixed in Barbuda to 407.

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) is now getting ready to move to the next phase of the recovery effort on Barbuda which is the rebuilding of homes and the continuation of the roofing project.

NODS is making it clear that the re-building of homes after a disaster is the responsibility of the owner. Government provides assistance primarily to persons in need.

The standard home to be rebuilt is for a 28×30 two-bedroom house for families or a one-bedroom 10×14 structure to include kitchen, bathroom, living and dining rooms.

NODS will meet with the targeted individuals who lost their homes during the impact of Hurricane Irma and sort out the specifics.

Individuals who repair their homes on their own are being asked not to seek compensation from the government.

An Information Centre will be established on Barbuda shortly so that home-owners can be provided with further details.

  1. Funny how we love to cuss the Chinese and bend over backwards for the Americans.
Thank God for what China is doing in the Caribbean and Africa. Yes their own business interest benefit as well, but with the Americans everything benefit them.

  2. I am glad to hear that some of the roofing have been repaired from the hurricane damaged in Barbuda.
Another thing that puzzle me is the cost to repair 250 roofing…two million dollars. That is a very expensive project especially for the size of the roofs. I know materials and labor cost have been factorize but still it’s too costly.
