The Antigua & Barbuda Port Authority has announced the passing of its esteemed Chief Pilot, Captain Beresford Sam, who died yesterday morning.
Captain Sam’s death marks the loss of a towering figure in the maritime industry of Antigua and Barbuda, where his contributions over more than three decades have left a profound legacy.
Captain Sam was renowned for his professionalism, expertise, and unwavering dedication to the safe navigation of vessels into and out of Antigua’s harbors.

It is very sad on the passing of Captain Beresford Sam, in 1977 at the age of 16 years i first met Sam at the old Jetty down by Kings Casino now he was stationed on our then Police Boat Defender as a young Vincentian National and Police Officer himself and Corporal Alexander Grenada Constable Samuels Antigua and then Sargeant Harrigan Captain of Liberta i use to be a baggage boy at Dews Super Market and would go by the Jetty at Lunch and in and out of the Police Boat, that inspired me to become a Policeman and in 1980 i enrolled on March 15th 1980 rubbing shoulders together with Sam as a police Officer we played cricket and football for the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda Sam was quiet but very firm in his sound decision making he captain and manage both teams of the Force he was Promoted to the Ranks of Corporal of which i still called him Corporal Sam b4 i migrated to the US i now lives at Stubbs the Village in St.Vincent where he is from i called his phone last monday no answer i sent pictures of a Cruise Ship entering the Port of Kingstown and no answer only to be informed that he is dead by Thursday Sad his good friend and Pilot Colleague Captain Oliverre they were in the same Class in Jamaica doing Maritime Studies along with another Antiguan Hilary Emanuel from Bethesda i first met Captain Oliverre in 2023 Who gave me a message to give to Captain Sam 2 years ago but i saw him Just yesterday to informed him that i having seen Captain Sam as yet but i regresa to informed you that he passes on Thursday Captain Oliverre wept bitterly my condolence to his family the police Force the Antigua Port Authority and the Empire Football Club!
