Participants in this year’s Carnival are still owed their prize monies months after the summer festival.
Some have taken to social media to express their frustration, noting that this has become a regular occurrence.
Art ‘Drastic’ Philip, a finalist in the 2022 Groovy Soca Monarch competition, told social media that “all I want for Christmas is my prize money”.
He went to say that after more than four months of waiting he is tempted to “start talking the things”.
King Zacari, who crowned winner of the social commentary segment of the Calypso Monarch competition, also shared his displeasure saying: “Better can be done because money is being bantered about the place doing non-sense.”
The five-time Calypso Monarch was especially upset by the fact the winners were given empty envelopes on stage.
“The insult of it all is that when we were on stage, they had people posing with empty envelopes … they should have told me that it is just a show; I would have understood,” he stated.
Meanwhile, spokeswoman in the Ministry of Creative Industries, Cecelia Thwaites told Observer that they are “working on processing payments as speedily as [they] can”.
She, however, disclosed that there is a funding issue. NEWSCO

Jumbee_Picknee says, this type of behaviour by those charged with managing the Carnival/Bacchanal celebrations, as in not paying #winners, vendors, participants goes way back, way, way back for decades.
Years ago, the Calypsonians would be amongst the first to be paid, more like a month or two after the carnival ended, then others such as Mas/Troupe winners had to wait up to the following year to be paid and sometimes not.
It appears, as if it has gotten worst. It’s always being known, that Our Government for decades, don’t really care about local artists and the hard work which they put in to keep whatever #morsel is left, of the ORIGINAL CULTURE, as it pertains, to the Arts & Entertainment. This is one of the major factors, why local entertainers, rarely HEADLINE a show/event/concert. Of course Burning Flames, Short Shirt, Swallow are exceptions, but where is the continuity, to grow and reward our own local artists/talents?
It’s no wonder, DANCEHALL to Reggaeton to Spanish music are played in the entertainment spots over other “local” music.
It’s a lack of respect from those at the helm.

Pensioners please vote In the upcoming election. Over 2 years now I’m still 1 month behind on pension payment. Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, they can only payout when payments come in. This is my money, myself and my employer paid into the Govt mandated Ponzi scheme. Gaston, just know where you stand with me, I voting UPP!!!
