The Caribbean spiny lobster fishing season has reopened after a two-month closure. Residents can now legally catch, sell, and consume this seafood without penalties.
The closed season, from May 1 to June 30, is the shortest in the Caribbean and Latin America, falling below the four-month minimum recommended by several regional fisheries management bodies.
As lobster season begins, the queen conch season closes from July 1 to August 31 to protect this endangered species.
Authorities remind everyone that it is illegal to fish, sell, purchase, or possess any species during its closed season, with fines up to EC$50,000 and up to EC$100,000 for using unregistered local vessels for fishing.
The closed season for parrot fish, or chub fish, remains in effect until July 31. These regulations aim to balance commercial fishing interests with sustainable marine resource management in the Caribbean.
