Businesses to Pay $10 Daily Fee for Garbage Collection

11

Starting January 1, 2025, businesses will be charged a $10 daily fee for garbage collection, part of an effort to improve finances at the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).

Chairman Michael Joseph noted that although garbage collection for businesses in St. John’s is not NSWMA’s responsibility, they have been handling it for health and safety reasons.

The policy, originally proposed in 2015, aims to generate an additional $100,000 to $120,000 in monthly revenue for the authority, which currently operates at a deficit.

mmmm hope you all keep it that wayan not let it be home owners too

  2. Are we not being raped with numerous taxes already? Where does it end?
There is a desperate need FOR ALL government departments to be audited, starting with the ministry of finance, NAMCO, and a few other entities.

  3. People don’t understand the role of the government. In a nutshell, governments are put into place to better the quality of life of its people. Therefore, the government isn’t doing anyone a favour by collecting garbage, not even businesses. That’s a basic service. $10 per day is ridiculous, even more so because garbage isn’t collected every single day. This is a recipe for garbage to be on the streets more because some businesses are really struggling financially already. It’s just really funny that the government boasts about having so much, yet they’re just looking for ways to tax people and add more fees to make money. Stop making peoples life harder. That’s not the only way to make money jack! Get creative.

  4. Makes no sense, if its a private garbage collector then that is understandable but if it’s government then it’s just another way to line their pockets. Garbage collectors are government workers, they essentially will be collecting money daily to do the job they are already getting paid for. On top of that, saying that the NSWMA is not responsible for collecting garbage in town is like saying teachers are not responsible for the safety of students at school, it’s part of the job but maybe I am illiterate and don’t understand how these things work.

  5. Garbage collection is the responsibility of THE STATE. Not only that, they are going from 0 to $10. In the city the trucks pass every evening. This is potentially an extra $300 a month expense on top of the horrible roads in the city. It won’t be long before they are asking homeowners to pay for garbage collection AND sewage. Welcome to progress

  6. Does this include holidays and weekends too? It says, “$10.00 daily.” Approximately $200 – 300 per month in additional operating cost. Let’s pass it on to the consumer.
You’re perfectly right ComRaid Top Dawg. Tax them any which way then toss us some of the scraps on to us in the gutter before next election.

  7. It was discussed but never implemented, reason being they didn’t know how to do so. This was a plan of the UPP hence why they didn’t know ‘the know how’ to get it down.
Now that alp is overrun with UPP members who are knowledgeable on how to get certain things done there will be sensible things done in this country.

You guys are welcome in advance!

  8. $10.00 for businesses to collect their daily garbage. That is peanuts. I mean if their was a weigh factor attached to it I would say ok. But anyone that drives into town after business hours and see the amount of boxes and other waste that is left behind by the business community would agree that this is far too little. This should be at least a minimum of $50.00 per day. And that to me is more then reasonable.
