  1. These young robbers are making the things worse for everyone. If the robbery situation is not addressed, it could cause a decline in our tourism. Sometimes we tend to blame the police but the police alone cannot solve the issue – it requires a holistic approach of all stake holders.

For example, we are still doing too many cash transactions on the island – we need to move more towards a cashless society. But to do so, the banks must make it easier for small business to go cashless, which may require certain regulatory changes from the government. Presently the banks charge too much for mechants operating POS terminals and they would make more money if fees were reduced but more transactions are processed. It is also silly for some merchants to require you to purchase a certain amount for them to accept a card – one in Heritage Quay told me the transaction had to be over 65.00.

The government may have to drive this process and sadly, some of the government offices themselves may not even accept credit cards. In some places, not even the buses take cash – card only. If we get to that point, the robbers would not even expect you to have cash.

  2. @imho – as I said, we have to approach it from a holistic view – I only gave 1 example. Don’t know about you but I think most people would prefer if they rob you electronically than pointing a gun in your face. I think you missed the whole point of violent crime. Yes, stealing is a moral issue and you can never stop people from wanting to steal, but you can curtail the act of theft. In a simple example, if you leave money in a visible way on your dashboard, the likelihood of someone breaking into your car is far greater than if the money was not there.

Also, in going cashless, the government and security forces have an advantage.
