Buses Running At Full Capacity Will End With Fuel Subsidy

Once bus operators and the Transport Board agree on terms for a fuel subsidy, buses will no longer run at full capacity.

Information Minister Melford Nicholas says the Cabinet of Antigua & Barbuda responded to concerns that buses are running at full capacity despite social distancing protocols.

He said, the reversal of the full-capacity policy will allow for “some level of social distancing on public buses.”

The policy was seen as a major contradiction in social distancing protocols where residents are mandated to keep six feet apart at all times.

Buses were allowed to end social distancing protocols in June.

Nicholas says the exact amount of the fuel subsidy and the number of passengers buses will carry are matters left to be negotiated.
