Bus Operators Call for Fare Compliance Amid Rising Issues with Teen Commuters

2

The Antigua and Barbuda Bus Association (ABBA) is raising concerns over young commuters, especially teenagers, refusing to pay proper fares, Observer Media reported.

Public Relations Officer Earl Waldron highlighted the issue, noting children aged two to 12 are entitled to reduced fares, while those 13 and older must pay the full adult rate. However, operators are frustrated by teenagers frequently paying arbitrary amounts, a longstanding problem that has worsened recently.

Waldron criticized the expectation for bus operators to accept incorrect fares, comparing it to other businesses where customers must adhere to set prices.

To address this, ABBA has proposed new guidelines requiring primary school children to be in uniform to qualify for reduced fares. The proposal excludes secondary students, college attendees, and Youth Skills participants.
