Browne says Ghanaian nurses hired to protect health system amid U.S. pressure
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government’s decision to recruit nurses from Ghana was a strategic move to safeguard Antigua and Barbuda’s healthcare system amid growing uncertainty surrounding the future of Cuban medical brigades in the Caribbean.
Speaking on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne Show on Saturday, Browne said the United States has taken an increasingly hostile position toward Cuba’s overseas medical programme, prompting the government to diversify its healthcare workforce as a precaution.
“The United States evidently is very hostile against the Cuban brigade,” Browne said. “And we needed to at least manage that risk and to mitigate it.”

He stressed that the move was not intended to replace Cuban nurses and doctors, but to ensure continuity of care in the event of sudden disruptions.
“The best way to mitigate it, just in case we have to get rid of all of the Cuban nurses and doctors suddenly, is to get in some professionals from Ghana,” Browne said.
The prime minister said negotiations with Ghana began several months ago and that the country is expected to receive a significant number of nurses in the near term.
“So we went to Ghana and negotiated,” Browne said. “Within a matter of a week, week and a half, we will have about 115 Ghanaian nurses coming to Antigua.”

Hiring nurses from Ghana is not a strategic move, it is an uncaring, tyrannical and horrible move. Why not attract nurses from medically advanced countries by hiring those who went to internationally recognized universities, who passed high exam requirement, and simple pay these nurses better. Instead of hiring Ghanian and paying them crap, risking the life of the people in the United Islands of Antigua and Barbuda.
This is like a death sentence, I have so many clients who studied in the US at told schools for nursing who are now applying for greencard based on exceptional ability in their work as a nurse.
I am against this plan. This is a horrible plan and if Antiguans and Barbudans, we, had enough sense we could see this for what it means, these politicians have 0 care for us. You literally think we deserve Ghanian level nurses and not developed country level advance nurses. Just like the untrained level doctors at the local hospital.
@MyWayoh Helping.
I live in the United States. On a rating stages the better skilled nurses are from, Africa (many countries), Caribbean, Philippines. Nursing is worldwide has standards. In most countries you have to take license exam
Ghanian nurses are sought after worldwide so please get out of the colonial mindset.
Nursing is nursing, There is nobody called a “developed country” nurse. New equipment are available all the time and nurses have to be trained on these.
Calm down.
Provide me with evidence that these nurses are trained with the $1.5 million USD medical equipments and new medication that sadly their country do not have and never have?
This is why we need developed countries nurses because undeveloped country nurses does not even know such s thing exist.
I have represented nurses in applying for exceptional ability or extraordinary ability green card.
Do we really not know the training in a Ghanian or Antiguan nursing school is no where close to a US university with access to $20 billion usd funds, equipments, new medication and procedures?
Oh my goodness, Antiguans and dead. We are finished, if we are in Antigua. How many of my family had to fly out of Antigua for advance medical care because Antigua and Ghana doesn’t have such care?
You are going to compare advance research and billions of US dollars to basic training? And I am not saying this to hurt my African family, I am saying this to show their is a difference in training that is can determine whether some lives or die.
Stop giving people such a hard god dam time to get into the nursing school you know how many people the turn down because of crap talking bout you can’t more that 3 grade 3 wtf is tht isn’t a grade 3 a pass …..y’all sickening DO BETTER
I know what you are talking about.
At the end of the day Nurses and Doctors are trained about the human body .
They are trained to measure blood pressure, draw blood and to give injections.. That’s the basics.
Then there is the issue of equipment which is an advancing entirely different matter.
Advanced blood measure and EKG etc that feeds into data collection.
If one has to insert a catheter or tube, that’s a physical thing that cannot be done by any machine.
As for drug, the name of a drug is. Less important than the class of the drug.
There is no technology that can teach that.
Last year, I was in the hospital and they had to draw some bld work. The supervisor nurse had a student nurse and asked if the student could draw blood. I gave the ok.. She couldn’t do the job, after being trained in a multimillion school.
A good healthcare system has skillful.nurses with good attitude along with working equipment and continuous training.
Please stop with your Africa is bad mindset
In other words Donald Trump runs Antigua!! Brown is just a puppet.
@My Way Of Helping talking shit again. Silly fool. No one cares what you think Everson!
Remember everyone, this wannabe smart guy left Antigua a long time ago and writes his crap from his apartment in New Jersey. He is out of touch with everything.
This person must be an idiot. What person on planet earth don’t want good, better and best for their own people (referring to the idiot @little dog).
Who are you? Why are you such a fool that you think my people in the United Islands of Antigua and Barbuda don’t deserve the best?
Why do you think it is not strategically better to hire less of the best (what you can afford) than more of the not advanced and not adequately trained (just to say you have more nurses but not sufficiently trained)?
Who are you so I may award you with your achievements.
@My way of helping or whatever u call yourself, I bet u don’t know anything about the subject matter. Ghanaian nurses are sought after all over the world. Go to your neighbours, Barbados. They bring Ghanaian nurses every 2 years to help with their health system. What do u know about Africa. If u don’t have anything sensible to say, just shut up. If u happen to be in America, ask about African nurses and doctors, and you’ll be told how professional they exhibit in their work. You, what do u know about Ghana or Africa. Wake up!!
