Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph says 120 nurses are expected to arrive in Antigua and Barbuda in the coming weeks, providing relief for an overstretched public health system.

Speaking during the Governor General’s annual visit to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre on Tuesday, Joseph said mounting pressure on the hospital’s emergency department has exposed limits in its size and design.
About 25,000 patients used the emergency department this year—more than 2,000 a month—far beyond what the facility was built to handle, he said.
“The size of the emergency department cannot accommodate this volume,” Joseph said, adding that policy discussions between the Health Ministry and hospital administrators will begin shortly to address the strain.

He said solutions will extend beyond physical expansion to include changes aimed at improving patient flow, capacity and staffing. The incoming nurses are expected to be central to easing pressure on frontline staff and improving emergency care.
Further consultations are planned in the coming weeks as authorities work toward a broader response to rising demand at the country’s main public hospital.

Hope these 120 have a COMPASSIONATE, PROFESSIONAL, CARING, POSITIVE attitude and work ethic unlike the majority of nurses currently working at the hospital
Which country these nurses coming from? Thought that woukd he very relevant to the disclosure. Just a few years ago Max Hurst was bragging about we will have do many nurses that they are planing to export to other country’s like the USA. What want wrong? Lies and more lies !
I need an African momma ooooooohhh. Hope my dreams can be fulfilled.
O
from where?
This announcement is way too vague from our out-of-kilter Health Minister Molwyn Joseph, especially after the recent loss of the Cuban medical practitioners.
Where are these 120 replacements coming from?
Do we have, as a good hearted nation the appropriate wherewithal to house all of them?
Furthermore, are they as qualified as the Cubans that were unceremoniously removed? Or is this just a number crunching political exercise?
I hope not!
I always take note of what these fancy-dan politicians tell us, however, it’s what they aren’t telling us that fascinates me even more so.
You can’t beat being a brilliant critical thinker.
Not only from where, but was this included in the budget and at what cost?
So this is what transparency looks like? 😂.
This vague and very short article on something as important as this.
@ANR..do your journalist actually ask questions, or do you just write what you are told?
It’s got to be the latter, because more time was spent writing an article of GB cussing out the PM of Trinidad, than this most important immigration and health news, not to mention the serious economic implications.
Do better ANR..bring the people the entire news please, not this half-witted story.
Just saying.
How can I apply?
Tension at MSJMC will be off tge charts.
Is this new arrangement in regards to the abrupt release, of the Cubans per USA request?
Strange things are happening. Strange.
Will the new Hotel at the top of Friars Hill, formerly Dunbars Lands, be ready to accommodate these nurses? Who will be responsible for their stay and for what period and at what cost?
@ Islanman26,
Are you for real? Journalism what’s that?
Didn’t you know they copy and paste what Maurice Merchant gives them.
Can you bsne one just one journalist on their staff?
As usual the information provided to the public only raises questions and highlighted the incompetence.
When 20 to 25 percent of a population is visiting the hospitals emergency department; This is a healthcare delivery crisis. That’s what it would be in any other country.
To say that “that policy discussions between the Health Ministry and hospital administrators will begin shortly to address the strain”; is an insult.
The lack of poly clinics (Primary care units) is the problem. This is insult as usual, need I say more
Did anyone bother to check Barbados to see how they are coping with these nurses?
Why was nothing mentioned in the budget presentation 2 weeks ago?
I hope these nurses sign an agreement to tpractice good hygiene. Because the airport is left with a nasty odor when Air Peace lands.
@ Melchesidec,
What difference does it make what Barbados is doing?
It’s partially due to the fact that “The Opposition Party and The Mediums of Information” are either incapable or has no interest in focusing on what is happening in Antigua and Barbuda.
The real issue in this case is that Antigua and Barbuda like most of CARICOM is not able to hold on to trained nurses and doctors.
In a recent announcement, rather than a Health Science Center (Doctors, Nurses and Allied Health Sciences) at UWI Five Islands; our government is proposing a Law School.
How stupid can they get? It’s allowed to be pursued without any blowback.
In Antigua and Barbuda we go along with the narrative and in this case a policy initiative, put out by the Government most of which is misleading and false.
Think about it as the Prime Minister says a Law School at UWI Five Islands will allow Antigua to export lawyers across the Eastern Caribbean.
In the mean time the nurses are coming out of Ghana. Rather than stating the Government is replacing the Cubans with Ghanaians nurses; the Minister of Health chooses to state the number of visits to the 25,000 emergency care at the Hospital.
Any informed Minister of Health and an informed Opposition Party would know there is something wrong with that statement.
In doing so the Minister of Health fails in recognizing that he has highlighted a failing healthcare system watch.
At no point does the m Government and The Opposition Party recognize the fact that this is a collapsing healthcare system, in which migrant nurses and a Law School at UWI Five Islands will not address.
