Browne Reaffirms Support for Rastafarian Community’s Agricultural Growth
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting Rastafarian farmers in expanding food production, recognizing their significant role in agriculture and food security.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show, the Prime Minister pledged government assistance in improving water access, mechanization, and overall agricultural infrastructure to help the Rastafarian community increase productivity.
“The Rastafarian community has long been involved in agriculture, and we are committed to ensuring they have the necessary resources to scale up,” Browne stated. “We will be providing access to irrigation, wells, and other key infrastructure to improve food production.”
He emphasized that expanding agricultural output is a national priority, especially as Antigua and Barbuda seek to reduce reliance on imported food.
Browne revealed that his government is working with the Ministry of Agriculture and APUA to increase irrigation and well access for farmers.
“One of the major challenges for farmers is reliable water access. We are taking steps to ensure that the Rastafarian community, along with other farmers, has improved irrigation and access to well water,” he said.
He added that the government will also assist with mechanization efforts to enhance efficiency and reduce the reliance on manual labor.
The Prime Minister urged Rastafarians and other local farmers to take advantage of government programs designed to strengthen food security and economic resilience.
“Farming is a key sector, and we need more investment in large-scale production. Our government is ready to support those who are serious about increasing food output,” Browne stated.
His remarks come amid broader government initiatives to expand local food production, reduce imports, and promote self-sufficiency in agriculture.
With ongoing efforts to boost farming infrastructure and support traditional agricultural communities, Browne reiterated that the Rastafarian community will remain a vital partner in national food security efforts.
“We are making sure that those who work the land have the resources they need to thrive. This is not just about agriculture—it’s about sustainability, resilience, and securing our future,” he concluded.
