Amid U.S. scrutiny of Cuban doctors deployed across the Caribbean, Prime Minister Gaston Browne insisted that Cuban medical workers in Antigua and Barbuda are well-paid, well-treated, and not subject to trafficking.

Speaking after bilateral talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Browne dismissed accusations that Cuban medical personnel serving abroad are being exploited under forced labour conditions.

“We are not involved in any form of human trafficking,” the Prime Minister said. “In fact, the Cuban nurses and doctors here are probably better compensated than many of our local practitioners, once you factor in free housing, utilities, and other benefits.”

He explained that the medical workers are granted scheduled vacations every two years and have full freedom to return home, further challenging the claims made in some U.S. policy circles.

The deployment of Cuban medical brigades has long been a point of contention between Havana and Washington, with U.S. officials calling for increased scrutiny of the programme.

Browne, however, maintained that Antigua and Barbuda’s partnership with Cuba is based on mutual respect and legitimate healthcare cooperation.

“These are professionals who contribute meaningfully to our public health system,” he said. “There is nothing coercive or exploitative about their presence here.”

Browne added that the discussion with Secretary Rubio helped clarify misunderstandings and reiterated Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to upholding international standards in all bilateral partnerships.

  1. Those medical professionals have saved countless lives in the region. I will always say they deserve respect.

  2. Cubans that have fled their country and now live in the USA are the determined to bring down the Cuban Government no matter what. Marco is a descendent from one of those Cubans. And he therefore is the best person Trump could put to try and bring down Cuba. Even if it means taking down the rest of the Caribbean with them. The Cuban Embargo is about Sixty years old and the Americans will not let go. Ever. Note that the argument changes along the years. It started with Dictatorship, then Communism and then Human Rights and now Human Trafficking. The Caribbean will just be considered collateral damage in their fight to bring down Cuba. And the USA doesn’t want anyone being neutral in this. Either you are with them or against them. After Cuba they will ask us to chose between them and Venezuela and thereafter between them and China. Who runs the WORLD? USA. Accept this simple fact of life

  3. That Cuban doctors are not part of human tracking scheme and modern slavery? Lmao….
Why you guys are so brainwashed easily of this propaganda?
Cuba government is the one exporting them as a product. They don’t come here for free, Every single country in the Caribbean must paid for each of them. But the concern of USA are this:
1-. Cuban doctors must sign a contract before leave Cuba to work overseas, (They cant have a copy of that contract imagine, go and ask every doctor if they have a copy of the contract). The conditions are bizarre, one of them is: If they refuse to keep working, they are BANNED to return Cuba for 8 years. Simple. They are obligated to give over 60 % of their salary to the Cuba Government ( Some destinations they take over 90 % of their Salary)
2-. Cuba government don’t allow them to travel with their family while working overseas. (Spouse/children’s).
3-. In the rules of conduct you find rules like: NO driving, no take part of local festivities, no engage in relationships, (Most of this they do it but not openly, but if some doctors started to be little independent, they will apply these rules and send them back to Cuba, is like they turn eyes to one side while you are doing it, in order to have something against you, and say “” Ohh you are violating the rules of conduct of your contract so you are going back)
4-. Cuban Doctors don’t have free movement while working. Lets say they are working in X country and in their vacations they don’t want to visit Cuba they want to spend their holiday in some other place using their money.. They cant do it. Is like CUban working is Antigua decided to travel with an Antigua friend for one week to St. Marteen during holidays.. THATS is prohibited.
5-. Most places they work, some members of their Teams hold all their passport (Recently due public claims about this topic they allow them to keep it, but in other countries they don’t have it)
6-. Work permit and extension visas are not processed on time intentionally (But they play dummy about it) They try to give Gaps between extensions and work permit so they can apply for residence benefits after working for 4 years. If you see the passport you will notice they have lot of gaps, even they work without having work permit stamped, that move is intentionally, after 4 years they cant take the benefits of Permanent Residency because they have lot of gaps.
USA just want the Caribbean countries to give full Salary and give those Doctors the chance to have a work contract in base of local laws, not the law of Cuba that don’t apply over here. Give them the opportunity to bring their closed family while working over here (Of course the doctors need to take responsibility of their expenses).
Guys just turn the shoes to the other side…None of you will accept those conditions if your government want you to send you to work overseas. Please don’t try to minimize this..
Cuban doctors are not the problem, they are being used for the benefits of Elites. And that is what matters. Cuba leaders live if luxurious properties and have a lavish life over there, but their speech is always trying to be “Victims” YEah..Victims while drinking Blue Label, Champagne and eating delicious RIb Eye steak.
