Backdated Payments and Unannounced Increases: Inside the Browne Administration’s Salary Controversy

Source: Real News Antigua- Ministers in the Browne Administration have been awarded an increase in their Duty Allowance, as of January 1, 2023, taking their payment from $1,000 to $3,000 a month, reliable sources have alleged to REAL News.

Accordingly, all eight Cabinet ministers – Gaston Browne, Maria Browne, E.P. Chet
Greene, Charles “Max” Fernandez, Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin, Molwyn Joseph, Melford
Nicholas, and Darryl Matthew – will receive $24,000, each, to cover the Allowance for
last year, 2023.

This hike follows their controversial salary increase of 14 percent – which our
Newsroom broke last Friday, April 5 – which was backdated to last January, as well.
The sums in back-pay ranged from $19,000-plus for the prime minister to $6,000-plus
for the senators who serve as ministers of state.

Again, there was no word of this increase in Duty Allowance in this week’s Cabinet
Notes or in the post-Cabinet press briefing.

Ironically, the sources tell REAL News, despite Prime Minister Browne’s claim that the
increase in Opposition Members’ salaries had been delayed by a “glitch” in information
relayed from the Parliament, no instructions to pay them has been sent to the Treasury,
to date.

Today, April 12, on an outing on Observer Radio, Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle
described Browne’s comments on the 14 percent increase to government ministers as
untruths.

He noted that the 2024 Budget Estimates record the same amounts in annual salaries
for parliamentarians as were recorded since 1994, proving that no increase this year –
and none for last year – had been authorized.

  1. Kill Them ABLP!!! Elections have consequences.
Meanwhile, they cant find money to: pay calypsonians, musicians and others; they can’t find money to pay pensioners; they can’t pay small merchants; they cant pay government contributions to recognized bodies. Look, I could go on and on but as all should be able to see now, them people don’t care. They are now taking their “self enrichment” directly from your pockets.
Boy how I wish that only ABLP supporters alone, and those who accepted the “filthy lucre”, will have to pay.

    • im a teenager and they can’t issue a survivor’s benefit payout for my deceased mom over a year now, but have hundreds of thousands of dollars to do other things. I hate this place!

      • So sorry for your loss; and I hope that a government Minister will read this and ensures you receive your survivor’s Benefit.

May your mother rest in everlasting peace, and the Lord surrounds and protects you with his loving kindness. Amen 🙏🏽

  2. GASTON BROWNE AND HIS CABAL ARE DOING TO THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY DESERVED.YOU THE PEOPLE VOTED THEM BACK IN TO OFFICE.YOU ARE NOW GETTING WHAT YOU DESERVED.FOR YOU THE PEOPLE LIKED TO BE SODOMIZED.THEY ARE GETTING RICHER.WHILE THE PEOPLE AS A WHOLE ARE GETTING POOR AND POORER.I DO HOPE THIS WOULD BE A WAKE UP CALL LIKE WE HAD IN 1968.ARE WE NO MIN FRAID A NUTTEN BACK DEN.

  3. These are some of the reasons why this issue is is being questioned like this. One cannot help but see this as a clandestine move to give themselves a pay raise plus other benefits. Transparency falling flat on its face and the fact that all these issues are only now coming to the fore is caused for concern. Government on its back foot only now trying to address and explain clearly what was a very smirky undertaking

  4. Y’all wanted the lil boy from point, well here he is. Bad treatment all year round, financial abuse, abuse of power, free reign in this country just treating it’s citizens like shit and then he give y’all the lil carnival and one nation concert and all the past wrongdoings go to the side. We asked for it we got it. Vote better next time

  5. This 200% increase by the ABLP is an outrage, if this report is correct. This cannot and must not go ahead – it is a slap in the face to all honest Antiguans.

Gaston Browne’s nant detractors are going to have a field day; and rightly so!

Many concerned citizens warned the country before the last General Election what was in store if the ABLP were re-elected once again.

MY WORD, HOW CAN 13 LOST VOTES BE SO COSTLY TO ANTIGUA & BARBUDA???

As Lord Acton once said in 1887:

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”

  6. Many warned us about this greedy, financial dunce, wannabe dictator, and how he would destroy Antigua and Barbuda, but the lowlife, beggarly elements in our society, came cap in hand taking trinkets in exchange for a vote. Now we the patriots must endure further insult at the hands of this clow and his hoodlums.
Let’s see Tinman, Giles, Pam, Dave Ray et spin this one. Nothing short of a shut down and forcing this idiot out of office will do.

    • Yes boss, our political class here in Antigua stink no hell, and sadly we’ve no backbone to call it out.

Can we bring back the Barbudan’s to show us how?

They are mentally tougher us than us, and aren’t intimidated by the ABLP or Gaston Browne’s avarice and political nonsense.

Glad my beautiful partner is a second generation Barbudan (and she doesn’t suffer fools gladly), she stronger and more educated than me – much respect!

  7. Where are the Gastonites like Tenman,From The End Lines, and others.I would like to hear your responses and justifications for this.

  8. And customs officers can’t get their overtime and back pay that’s due to them years upon years upon years. This is wickedness, cause the customs department brings in millions and millions for the Government and what do they get in return over worked and underpaid and still been owed. The Custom Officers need their monies, they have families and bills to take care of too.

  9. Take a real good look at this cabinet!
    A real good look!
    Tell me what you see?
    👀
    Look closely,
    You’ll see it..
A room full of greedy, corrupt, individuals!
I guess they forget you can’t take it with you.

  10. I am convinced that they are not trying to win another term. Rather they are grabbing all they can get within the short space of time left. I bet they won’t call an early election this time around.

    • @ They don care, you could be on to something there.

I’ve just read that the current incumbents in the UK government, are doing the exact same thing by emptying the tax-paying coffers of the treasury, so that whoever comes into power later in the year will have no money to run the UK sufficiently.

      AREN’T POLITICIANS AWFUL?

  11. This governance of The Coon & Loons Circus Show, surely have never impressed me. Simply because, I’ve chosen so to remain apolitical; and only voice my opinions on the vileness that is manifested in the sphere of the governance neglect to address the aspirations of the people: such as, that which bring wrath to my Patriotic Nationalist Conviction. The amazing governance subterfuge that perplexed me most is, the slumbering sleeping minds of the society construct of the Antiguan mindset malaise: enough such as to give comfort and solace for governance to leech off the people without any compunction or compassion. This is effected by the archaic system of the inherited monarchy governance that need to be jettison; for an indigenous system of: us the people by the people. Thus relinquishing the enthroned mindset, and the accompanying concept of leeches and toads devouring the carcasses of the masses; like scavengers at a feast. The emphasis of governance should be about the upliftment of the people, and not artful self enrichment. Having mentioned my pursuance to the commitment of governance of the people by transparency and accountability: adequate compensation is to be afforded to the ministers of governance and divestiture of any business venture that might become conflicted with the portfolio entrusted to be so administered. All this ballyhoo and bubbling resentment to the fact that a paycheck enhancement for the ministers could have been avoided if it wasn’t for the prostituting mindset of greed enshrined in the tribal politics and policies that is fostered on the bottom feeding dwellers; whose value is rooted in handouts and hand-me-down feel good moments of Alms for the poor; to stay poor: such as to keep the top on top until they realize that Mental Slavery is a criminal offence to be guilty of. Awake and rise: My People. The night brings ‘fore-day to dawn.
