An Antiguan recovering from COVID-19 is warning residents that the disease should not be taken lightly.
Dennarie “Gear Up” Roberts posted the warning on his Facebook Page last week saying, “the doctors ask me to do this when I got better.”
Along with the message, the 24-year-old posted a photo of himself in a hospital bed.
“I never think I would post this pic on here but in hopes to encourage my friends and family on here to stay safe and stay home I will do anything!! I want to write this long message about my walk wit COVID-19 and how I could have lost my life but hopefully when I get better and feel more comfortable I be able speak up in a video and tell you how crazy of a ride it was”, he posted.
He said the post was him doing his part to say “please stay inside ,stay away from people (social distancing )and do wat have to do to stay safe please the virus is not a joke want you to kno it’s real and it really wants to kill you. Do what’s right and stay home.”
On Sunday, Roberts’ brother reigning Soca King Dennis “Menace” Roberts said his brother was “doing a lot better. Just trying to get his mobility back in terms of walking and trying to open up his appetite because he lost a lot of weight.”
According to the singer, his brother, who is in the United States, started experiencing a severe headache in late March, which progressed to body pains and breathing issues, which he described as “short blowing”.
He said his brother went to the hospital and “they gave him some oxygen, they discharged him and gave him Tylenol, then afterwards it seem to get a little bit more worse where he kinda made some similarities or compared it to chikungunya where he could not walk, he had difficulty moving so he went back for a second opinion”.
During his second hospital visit, “they gave him some more oxygen, Tylenol and, I think, Mucinex and told him okay to go back home and they continue to monitor him, and they also tested him. So, basically this persist to a part now where it was getting a little bit more worse he couldn’t walk to the bathroom, he couldn’t stay up, like sit on the bed for a long period of time, so he kept lying down and was gasping for breath”, the singer explained.
“I think it was April 5th when he got the results that he was positive. Everything went into rapid mode. I don’t know if it was anxiety or the virus just chose to speed up everything from there because he went from there straight to one hospital then they transferred him to a specialized hospital where he went into the ICU”, he revealed.
“He’s a very strong guy he told me basically he doesn’t want any one of the family members to get this disease. From his experience, it’s a very frightening event”, the soca artiste said as he too cautioned residents to following the safety protocols of social distancing and proper hygiene.

Speedy Recovery .. But please in getting your appetite back, please eat healthy.. any disease is worsen by people with underlying health issues .. and a lot of time as West Indians and black people we do not eat Healthy … diabetes, sugar, high blood pressure just seems to be the norm and we are grossly overweight…. and we don’t mind… young people feel like once you’re growing up you will just get fat … please let’s try to be a bit more healthy so we can stand a better chance in the event that we get an illness.. everyone is dying for KFC in Antigua to open up.. I’m not saying it can’t be eaten every once in a while but a lot of people sit down and eat it day in day out . A lot of young men and women in Antigua are OVERWEIGHT! All I’m saying is let’s make a commitment to ourselves to take care of the one body we have.

Sending Prayers and blessing to you Mr. Roberts.
Speedy recovery Mr. Roberts.
There is a YouTube video called “how to breathe if you have a respiratory infection like COVID-19” by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, Immunology.
It pretty much teaches you how to correctly exercise your lungs during and after an infection. Even as a normal lung exercise without infection.
Basically, you take a deep breath, hold it for five seconds and then right after the deep breath, you should cough. Five reps and Preferably not around other people.
