SOURCE: NOAA – 500 AM AST, Friday, June 23, 2023 – Tropical Storm Bret continues to impact the Windward Islands with its trailing rainbands, producing strong winds and heavy rainfall.

The latest updates indicate that Bret’s center is located at approximately latitude 13.4 North and longitude 62.9 West, about 115 miles (185 km) west of St. Vincent and 420 miles (670 km) east of Curacao.

With maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 1001 mb (29.56 inches), Bret is moving westward at a speed of 18 mph (30 km/h).

This general motion is expected to continue throughout the weekend. The forecast track suggests that Bret will move away from the Windward Islands and traverse the eastern and central Caribbean Sea over the next few days.

The government of Barbados has discontinued the Tropical Storm Warning for Barbados. However, a Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Dominica, St. Lucia, Martinique, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

This warning indicates that tropical storm conditions are occurring within the warned area. Residents and interests adjacent to the southeastern Caribbean Sea are advised to monitor the progress of Bret closely.

Although weakening is anticipated in the next couple of days, with Bret expected to dissipate over the central Caribbean Sea by Saturday night or Sunday, it is important to remain cautious.

The storm’s maximum sustained winds currently reach 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km), primarily north of the storm’s center.

The primary hazards affecting land include significant rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, with localized maximums up to 10 inches, across portions of the Lesser Antilles from Guadeloupe south through St. Vincent and the Grenadines, including Barbados.

These heavy rainfall totals have the potential to trigger flash flooding, particularly in areas of higher terrain, and urban flooding is also a possibility.

Additionally, surf conditions generated by Bret are expected to gradually subside along the Lesser Antilles.

However, swells are likely to increase in areas adjacent to the central Caribbean Sea later today and on Sunday.

These swells pose a risk of life-threatening surf and rip currents. It is advised to consult updates from local weather offices for further information on these conditions.

As Bret continues its path through the region, it is essential for residents to remain vigilant and follow guidance from local authorities.

Stay informed about the latest updates and take necessary precautions to ensure personal safety and protect property.
