UWI Five Islands Sets June 30 Deadline for New Law Degree Programme Starting August 2026
The University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus has announced that applications for its new Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme are now open, with a deadline of June 30, 2026, ahead of the programme’s scheduled start in August.
In a notice issued this week, the campus said the degree will be offered in conjunction with the UWI Mona Campus, allowing students in Antigua and Barbuda to pursue legal studies locally.
The announcement comes as Prime Minister Gaston Browne has highlighted plans to expand access to higher education, including the introduction of free university education for Antiguans and Barbudans.
Speaking at the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s manifesto launch on Monday, Browne said the initiative forms part of a broader push to improve opportunities for young people and reduce financial barriers to tertiary education.
He said the government intends to ensure that citizens can access higher education without cost, describing it as an investment in national development.
Browne also pointed to ongoing expansion at the Five Islands Campus, positioning it as a key institution in the country’s education strategy and a driver of long-term economic growth.
The Prime Minister said such initiatives are aimed at equipping citizens with the skills needed to compete in a changing global environment, while strengthening local capacity in key professions.
The introduction of the law programme marks a significant addition to the campus’s academic offerings and is expected to provide new opportunities for students seeking careers in the legal field without having to study abroad.
Prospective students can apply online via the UWI Five Islands Campus website at www.fiveislands.uwi.edu.

Best to go on the site or visit/call them
Honourable Leader, you seem hell bent on watering down the UWI brand, don’t you?
The Law faculty is in Barbados. Engineering and Agriculture in Trinidad and Medicine in Jamaica. Shouldn’t you focus on creating an area in Antigua, instead of trying to take away some of one? Five Islands is not set up for such intensive areas of study. What next?
Instead of using the money in the education budget to improve the schools you are going to spend the people’s money on following your selfish dream? Why? Because you feel nobody could stop you?
What are you trying to do? Leave our children and grandchildren and their children with such a debt that they would never forget you? Is that how you want to be remembered as taking away their future from them?
You must know that almost all the youngsters leaving school would want to sign up to do law, and none for nursing nor teaching. Especially if it is for FREE.
Please sir, we know you have the power. You already beat down everybody into submission.
Everybody has their two hands up. Think of the young people who would not be able to go to Miami to school. Give them a break. Make the schools here good enough for them to get a decent education at home.
