Veteran UPP Member Desmond Charles Resigns, citing Party Leadership and Direction.

Dear Madam General Secretary,
I am writing to formally tender my resignation as a member of the United Progressive Party, effective immediately.
This is a decision born of painful clarity. I became a supporter of the UPP in 1990 and joined as a member in 1992. I joined the party of Baldwin Spencer, Wilmoth Daniel, and Harold Lovell at a time when sacrifice, tolerance, love, respect, and team play were the order of the day. I believed in those values to the extent that I gave up my own candidacy in St. George to help pave the way for Dr. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro to become our first female MP.
However, the UPP of today bears little resemblance to the party I joined back then. The current organization is plagued by self-centeredness, gross disrespect for long-standing members, a lack of strategic focus, and a profound inability to engage with people of differing views.
These shortcomings are fully on display in the divisive, destructive conduct of UPP Chairperson Gisele Isaac. Yet, to be fair to Ms. Isaac, she is only one of many in the UPP leadership who have presided over the party’s decline.
The Political Leader, Jamale Pringle, remains ultimately responsible for the continued leadership failures plaguing the party. He has shown no interest in maturing into his role or guiding the UPP on a positive path. His conduct is a disservice to both the party and the nation.
It is shocking to see a party which once cried, “Leadership Matters!” become comfortable with both the absence of effective leadership and total failure to present a credible alternative to the current government.
It therefore comes as no surprise that in recent polling on whom the country trusted more to lead, Prime Minister Gaston Browne outperformed Mr. Pringle by a margin of over 4 to 1.
I will never put party over country. I have always believed in that principle, and I remain guided by it today.
My decision to resign from the United Progressive Party reflects my conviction that I cannot continue to support an organization whose current direction and leadership no longer serve the best interests of Antigua and Barbuda.
I remain grateful for the many friendships and experiences gained during my years in the UPP. However, I can no longer associate myself with an organization that has lost its way so completely.

Look, this country is in dire need of a viable opposition party that’ll hold this government to account on all fronts; especially on cost of living; fulfilling our water and road infrastructure; and in addition to transparency in all financial services/matters.
What the hell is happening???
Instead of fighting the good fight, we are witnessing an implosion in real time.
If we lose badly at the next General Election, maybe it’s time for a brand new political party to be formed, because who wants to live in an autocratic and unchallenged Antigua & Barbuda? 🇦🇬

@Capone – You wouldn’t want to be where $$$ flowing. You would be a damn fool. Regardless of what you might think. (and I have no affiliation with this man) Some people just really want to serve, and if they are stifled, how can one show their true potential? Y’all need to stop it. Politics is not the only field where people move from place to place. It happens every day, and has been happening since before Noah was a boy, but it is not open to the public as politics is. I keep saying, people do not stay where they are not wanted. Talk de truth. (You woulda stay there? I’m sure not!!!) If his pasture is greener with the ABLP and it’s there he wants to go, a fu he decision. Maybe he will get a chance to serve his community and his country on a whole, better! As soon as people decide to make a decision that they think is best for them, y’all jump up and talk about loyalty. He has a loyalty to himself and his family too! EVERYBODY leaving UPP, yet y’all keep saying the party stronger than ever. 60 million French men carn wrong. Pure bull shit and y’all know it, but y’all can’t call a spade an spade. @Brixtonian – I guess UPP is stronger than ever! I guess people leaving the party because it’s soooo good, and they are not up to standard of the goodness of the party, so they have to leave. This has to do with leadership, and there is none. This has nothing to do with AUTOCRATIC or UNCHALLENGED as you may call it. Please call it for what it is, and stop beating around the bush. Y’all keep taking the beam out of other people’s eyes except your own, and refuse to address the elephant in the room. I guess it’s still Gaston’s fault. Get real. This is too blatant now. Tap blame other people for the shortcomings of the party. (IMPLOSION OF THE UPP!!!) Everybody a run way. Something is wrong with that. I guess it’s NEXT LEVEL!
This sounds like he has had dialogue with the despotic leader of the alternative and he’s now making his move after a favourable deal. How much has he been offered? I think it’s going to be considerably less than 6 mil.
