Bramble gets new trial date for alleged statements made about Chief Magistrate

(Observer by Newsco) — Popular social media personality Washington Bramble was on Friday issued a new trial date – just over a week from now.

The 41-year-old defendant is said to have made remarks on Facebook in February last year about Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh for the purpose of insulting, intimidating, causing hatred, and causing enmity.

Bramble was to stand trial for the alleged crime last Monday but was not present on the day in question.

She was summoned to court Friday where she showed proof that she had been given a different date from that which the court had on record.

Magistrate Dane Hamilton Jnr then proceeded to hear other concerns from the defendant.

Bramble, a former teacher, inquired into whether the statute of limitations (the length of time a civil or criminal case can be brought to legal proceedings) had passed, since the alleged incident took place on February 7 2022 and she was not charged until August 4.

The prosecution indicated that the six-month period had not yet passed despite it being close, and the magistrate agreed and offered more clarification to the accused before ruling that the case will proceed.

In March 2022, Bramble was arrested on suspicion of committing the said crimes but was later released.

However, in August that year, the transgender woman was slapped with four charges under the Electronic Crimes Act.

Those charges could have been dealt with as indictable offences but instead the prosecution chose to try the matter summarily.

That means, if convicted, Bramble can only be sentenced to pay up to a $200,000 fine or be imprisoned for no more than three years, or both.

If the matter was committed to the High Court, the defendant could have been fined up to $500,000 or be jailed for up to seven years, or both.

Bramble’s fate will begin to unfold when the trial starts on March 6.
