Blue Waters Resort and Spa has started its journey of banning all single-use plastics

Practising sustainability efforts and becoming more environmentally conscious has become increasingly important to travellers of all ages.

Knowing this, we are extremely happy to share with you that Blue Waters Resort and Spa has started its journey of banning all single-use plastics in the near future and is the first resort in Antigua to lead the way to a cleaner, plastic-free future. In an effort to protect the island’s precious oceans and wildlife, the Resort has been ramping up its environmental and community responsibility efforts by installing refillable water stations across the property at convenient locations for all guest and staff usage.  In addition, when Resort guests arrive to their rooms and suites, they are provided with complimentary refillable BPA-free water bottles to use throughout their stay and to take home with them as a reminder of their time at the Resort and to practice plastic free efforts at home.

Additionally, the Resort encourages all staff on the importance of eliminating plastic waste through recycling and the use of bio-degradable disposable products in an effort to join the Resort’s goal of becoming both plastic-free and environmentally friendly.

Every year, the hotel alone, threw away approximately 120,000 plastic water bottles.  Despite the best efforts to recycle, it is recognized that the local recycling plant is often overwhelmed and as such most of these bottles end up in landfill on the island.  According to the World Economic Forum, by 2050 plastic will outweigh fish in the oceans. Single-use plastics, such as bottles and bags, account for about half of all plastic produced.

Blue Waters Resort & Spa is constantly exploring ways to reduce its environmental footprint, and this is one major step forward alongside other sustainable initiatives such as using energy saving equipment and processes, solar energy to power the walkways and garden lights around property, composting seaweed, planting the freshly grown herbs and produce on-site and using the Resort’s own water treatment plant of recycled water to irrigate its lush gardens.

“We have a responsibility to protect the environment our guests and staff cherish and we are delighted to be able to positively adopt innovative ways we can all do this,” said Blue Waters’ Managing Director, Gary Randall.

  1. Galley Bay Resort and Spa has been doing it since 2017 when I was there working. They have several refillable water stations across the property at convenient locations for all guest and staff usage. Their guests are provided with water bottles to use throughout their stay. I don’t what type the water bottles are but I know that they’re not glass bottles. Check out Galley Bay Resort ANR!!!
