Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) candidate for St Mary’s North, Dr. Philmore Benjamin, says improving care for the elderly will be a key priority, outlining plans for adult daycare services, recreational programmes and better social support.
Speaking during an ABS Television/Radio interview, Benjamin said older residents need more opportunities to remain active and socially engaged, rather than being left isolated at home.
“We have to think about some recreation,” he said, pointing to the need for programmes that go beyond basic care.

Benjamin proposed the introduction of adult daycare-style facilities where elderly people can gather, interact and maintain their mental wellbeing. “You could go and socialize with others, your age group… and keep your mental capacity a bit clearer,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of physical activity, suggesting that even non-competitive, low-impact sports could play a role in improving quality of life among seniors. “There’s no real limit for you to be doing something recreational,” he said, noting that structured activities could help promote both physical and mental health.
Transportation and accessibility also form part of his proposal, with the aim of ensuring elderly residents can participate in community life. Benjamin said such initiatives would help seniors “feel a part of the livelihood” rather than being sidelined.
Drawing on his background as a medical doctor, he framed elderly care as more than just treatment of illness, emphasizing dignity, engagement and overall wellbeing.
“I have a passion to improve elderly care in this country,” he said.
Benjamin’s broader platform includes healthcare reform, youth development, infrastructure improvements and community-based representation, as Antigua and Barbuda heads toward general elections on April 30.

Ball dancing would be nice.
After the election and God forbids Labour wins we are going to change the name of Antigua to the Promise land. Never heard so many promises and I’ve witnessed so many elections. A promise is comfort to a fool. That’s what the Labour Party thinks of us
