With school security still being a cause of concern for educators and parents alike, the Government reportedly has received surveillance systems from an unnamed benefactor.
It was announced this week that the benefactor, who allegedly “has great love for Antigua and Barbuda, purchased a security system of cameras and monitoring devices to address the problem of security at schools.”
Reports say the system might be installed in a short period of time, thereby fulfilling the commitment of the Ministry of Education to provide a secure school environment.
Education institutions have been the ongoing targets of vandals, thieves and trouble-makers, causing the loss of thousands of dollars in damage and/or the replacement of stolen items.
Accordingly, in addition to the reduction of crime on the school plants, Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the security cameras will help to deter violent behavior by the students, themselves.
He says that systems have already been installed in at least two secondary schools, with installation at two others expected shortly.
Meanwhile, a security expert claims that the cameras he observed at the Clare Hall Secondary are not appropriate for schools.
He says that wired systems are much better than the solar-powered ones, since those are motion detectors and pick up movement within a particular range.
According to him, a wired system would be much more effective, as it would record 24 hours a day and capture everything taking place on the compound – and not events in close proximity.
Further, he says, establishing a central monitoring location would be a much better way to keep check on the schools.
However, he says the existing solar cameras could act as secondary recording devices, along with a wired system, for optimum results.- REAL NEWS

THIS “EXPERT” SHOULD KNOW THAT THERE ARE WIRELESS CAMERAS THAT CAN PREFORM THE SAME 24HR RECORDING JUST AS WIRED AND IS ALSO EQUIPPED WITH A MONTION DETECTOR FEATURE!! ALL IS NEEDS IS ENOUGH STORAGE. THE INCIDENT WILL BE SENT TO THE CLOUD AND EVEN IF THE CAMERA IS DAMAGED THE EVENTS LEADING UP TO IT WILL STILL BE AVAILABLE FOR THE USER TO ACCESS THE INCIDENT. THE WIRED CAMERAS ARE LESS EFFECTIVE BECAUSE ALL IT TAKES IS FOR THE CRIMINAL TO CUT THE WIRES AND FIND THE SERVER/DVR AND DAMAGE IT!! TECHNOLOGY HAS MOVED ON MY FRIEND
Glad to hear from the expert, but give thanks to this kind hearted person for digging into their pockets and donating these surveillance cameras. Sadly, not even the government did such.
PS. Solar systems can be monitored 24/7 as well by inserting a card into the camera and changing the settings; and also by paying for an online plan that enables you to do such. Many of them come with various plans that can be purchased (usually per month). The free plan usually only detects upon movement. But with technology, they are improving.
“What are you talking about?” are YOU an expert? Asking for a friend? From what I’ve read, it appears that this expert said “from what he observed”. I’m not an expert in the English language by any means but I would take this to mean, that the model he OBSERVED is not capable of recording 24/7. My other question to you would be, are all schools equipped with the necessary upload bandwidth for online storage? While having h265 compression helps, a good internet connection with proper upload speeds would be recommended. Also, in regards to your comment regarding a criminal damaging the DVR/NVR, there are pros and cons to both wired and wireless systems. I would recommend you do some research before trying to come across that way.
With that out the way, I do think it is commendable that someone is trying to offer some assistance in beefing up school security. I personally think more after school programs (not necessarily controlled by the school) and teaching students different trades etc, can go a long way, as it gives them something to do. We all know what they say about idle hands. I think music and social media has alot of negative influence on students and parents should look into monitoring apps which can be installed on student devices. Parents need to do their part as well and not expect teachers or government, to “fix” everything. Spend quality time with your children, instill good values and dont leave their upbringing to Youtube and Social Media University. Everything begins at home. By doing that, we change the mind set and culture of these children and in turn, the community. There will always be bad apples but if we all do our part as parents and members of society, things will change.
@ not a tech guy, I suggest u stay in your lane and do your own research. You clearly don’t have a clue when it comes too the latest technology.
I would strongly suggest you take your own advice my friend. I have had the pleasure of dealing and working with multiple types of camera systems and technologies in my various roles over the past 20 years, including security cameras costing over US$15k each. But to each his own. :-). have a great day.
