It is with a heavy heart that we convey the news of the passing of Mrs. Rebecca Nathaniel, a cherished centenarian from Freetown, who had recently been residing in the United Kingdom. The Director and staff of the Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division express their deepest condolences to her family and all those who mourn her loss.
Rebecca reached the remarkable age of 104 at the time of her passing. Her memory is honored, and we join in the collective sorrow felt by her loved ones. It is worth noting that she was one of the many centenarians, and at present, there are 17 individuals from Antigua and Barbuda who have achieved this significant milestone.

She is now a cherished an ancestor. One of our cherished matriarchs and elder. RIP and condolences 🙏 to her family and loved ones.
Cousin Enid, I remembered that smile from the time I was a kid.
I said “Cousin Enid,” because in those days, culture had a different cadence, rhythm when you felt the Essence of Nature’s Ether dancing around us, and we moved to such.
Even though, we were not related by blood, I dare not feel this way, since, those that came and went before you would have it, no other way.
To the Nathaniel Family my heart felt condolences with the joy of knowing, what Cousin Enid meant to the Far Hill now known as Freetown Community.

ONE THOUGHT OR TWO
“A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”
“History is not everything, but it is a starting point. History is a clock that people use to tell their political and cultural time of day. It is a compass they use to find themselves on the map of human geography. It tells them where they are but, MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHAT THEY MUST BE;” – economically, socially/culturally, politically.
Condolences on the passing over of Mrs.Rebecca Vionie Nathaniel, to her family, friends, associates, villagers of Freetown!
A memorial respect and honor to Mrs. Nathaniel, SGOE (Senior Grandparent Order of Excellence) for the interactions of her life’s journey that purposefully impacted many.
Our native, venerable, noble Centenarians, descendants of our heroic, enslaved African ancestors had few and no choices within the economic and education systems of colonialism and slavery to earn a living: “Washing, cleaning, working in the canefield, picking cotton.”
Their labor produced the economic wealth and cultural benefits of our colonizers.
Our Centenarians survived by practicing the fundamental survivor (scarcity) principle: “Eat a little, Save a little, Spend a little.”
The African spirituality of our Centenarians internalized the hope of a better life, faith, while using the social benefits of the organized churches.
Let us interact with humility, grace, honesty, good intentions!….Be nice to each other!
Save our Humanity, Save our Youths, Save our Environment, Save our Soil!!!
Be safe and well!
Respect
As her blood relative, I say, LET’S CELEBRATE A LIFE WELL-LIVED!
Like her, let’s strive to be the “HOPE AND THE DREAM OF THE SLAVE”.
May we, RISE and RISE AS THE ANCESTORS KNEW WE WOULD!
