Barbudans Head to the Polls in High-Stakes Council Election
Barbudans are voting today to fill five vacant seats on the Barbuda Council, in what is seen as a pivotal election for the island’s future.
The Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM), which currently holds a majority on the Council, faces a renewed challenge from the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), returning to the race after boycotting the past two elections. Both parties are fielding five candidates.
At the heart of the contest are sharply contrasting visions: the ABLP promises development-led initiatives, while the BPM remains wary of central government-driven projects.
The BPM’s slate includes Nadia George, Wade Burton, Jacklin Frank, Melanie Beazer, and Nico Anthonio. The ABLP counters with Bonnietha John, Arthur Nibbs, Bernard Christian, Mackiesha Desuza, and Orlando Morris.
Of the Council’s 11 seats, BPM currently holds four and one senatorial appointment. ABLP gains today could signal shifting public sentiment, even if they don’t immediately tip the balance of power.
According to the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission, 1,328 Barbudans are eligible to vote. Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m., with all voting taking place at Holy Trinity School.
