Close to three hundred Barbudan families will benefit from another government-facilitated voucher programme which begins on Friday.

The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) has received 50 thousand Canadian dollars from the Canadian High Commission in Barbados, which will be distributed to families consisting of single-parents, the elderly, unemployed individuals and persons with special needs.

Vouchers will be given in denominations of two hundred, three hundred and five hundred dollars and will expire on August 31.

Barbudan residents will be able to purchase food and other supplies from two supermarkets in Antigua and one in Barbuda. However, purchases on alcohol and cigarettes are not allowed.

Individuals are asked to contact NODS at 462-4206 to find out whether their names are on the list of beneficiaries.

    • Didn’t they just have a hurricane though? Plus since Antigua and Barbuda has no social safety net whatsoever it’s nice to know that at least the Canadians cared enough to do something like this. If the roles were reversed and the hurricane had left Barbuda unscaved and Antigua in a wreck wouldn’t you have loved these ‘handouts’ too. It’s so easy to have no compassion because of hatred but it should be remembered that at the end of the day Barbuda is Antigua’s sister island. The relationship between us two have been strained but we can’t continue putting our brothers and sisters over there down when they are at their lowest. If the ship had dropped you off a few km away you’d be ‘those people’ too. Hoping for handouts because all forms of development were destroyed a year ago!

  1. Antigua has bene in the situation before or maybe son of you forget during the period of 1995-1999 we were hit by 8 hurricanes to include Louis and George but we did not sit down and wait for the governament to rebuild our homes we did it ourselves. The Barbudans are lazy people who want everything for free and no kind of development.
