LOOP: The government of Antigua and Barbuda has announced that the new international airport in Barbuda, set to open on October 3, 2024, will be named the Burton-Nibbs International Airport.
This decision comes after extensive consultations with Barbudan residents and careful deliberation by the Cabinet.
The naming honours two distinguished Barbudan politicians and entrepreneurs: Sir Eric Burton and the Arthur Nibbs.
Both men served as Members of Parliament(MPs) representing Barbuda and played crucial roles in the nation’s development, particularly during the formative years of Antigua and Barbuda as an independent state.
Cabinet stated, “During robust discussions, the Cabinet critically examined the contributions of several named persons, not only to the development of the twin-island state but more specifically to the socio-economic, cultural, and political landscape of the island of Barbuda.”
The Cabinet considered numerous suggestions from the public, acknowledging the contributions of several notable Barbudans, including: the late Claude Earl Francis, Sir McChesney George, Hilborne Frank and the current MP Trevor Walker.
However, Sir Eric Burton and Arthur Nibbs were ultimately chosen for their unique contributions.
“It was determined that these two individuals distinguished themselves at the advent of the twin-island state during the framing of the constitution of Antigua and Barbuda at Lancaster House in 1980,” the Cabinet explained.
Both Burton and Nibbs were described as “stalwarts of the political scene, pioneering entrepreneurs, and leaders who advanced commerce and economic development for the island.”
The decision to name the airport after these two figures reflects the government’s desire to honour Barbuda’s political history and economic development.

Unique contributions like, selling their souls to ABLP- pun intended.
@ Zackie,
There is such a thing as “naming rights” Wealthy individuals provide hundred of millions to have a medical center name after them; and likewise for airports and business schools.
Take it from “Murbee the Pimp”.
In this case a well-known individual is attempting to steal something hoping that naming rights will cause them to back off. gifted from another from another party and refer to it as a contribution.
Among the contribution is the gift of the Dulcina Hotel and 32 acres of land for not One (1) penny given by Auther Nibbs to your namesake interests (MURBEE)
The attempt to steal another 100 acres of farmland is also being seen as a contribution, with naming rights to cover their tracks.
Is it me or the government have decided that cone what may the airport would bare the name of someone who was a parliamentary representative for them. Why not call it Burton-Georgr in honor of Eric Burton and McChesney George
McChestney George did not gift or hand over anything to directly to Gaston, as The Dulcina Hotel and the 32 acres of seafront land as Auther Nibbs did.
Review the phasing and language used:
“During robust discussions, the Cabinet critically examined the contributions of several named persons, not only to the development of the twin-island state but more specifically to the socio-economic, cultural, and political landscape of the island of Barbuda.”
This is nothing but a cover for a Barbuda land grab.
Anytime there is a bad deal; Max Hurst always Use those words “robust discussions” and ” critically examined”.
They are trying to steal Eric Burtons farmland from his family, to add to the land they got from Auther Nibbs for the Murbee Hotel project.
This is subterfuge at the very highest level and neither the media or the opposition politicians have a clue what’s going on here.
In the naming of airport in Barbuda Claude Earl Francis’ name should have been at the top of the list followed by McChesney George. It was Claude Earl Francis who was the brain behind the Barbuda Local Government Act.
