The government of Antigua and Barbuda has adjusted its timeline for settling $35 million in back pay owed to public sector employees, according to Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst.

Initially expected in December, the first payment is now set to begin in January, with efforts underway to gather the necessary funds.

Speaking during a Post-Cabinet briefing, Hurst explained that the government plans to disburse December salaries early, before Christmas, to alleviate financial pressures for workers during the holiday season.

However, the back pay payments—equivalent to about one month’s salary for government employees—will likely begin in January, once the funds are secured.

“Sometime in January, we may begin paying down on the $35 million in back pay,” Hurst confirmed. He further outlined the government’s intention to prioritize resources, ensuring timely payment of regular salaries alongside these additional obligations.

Hurst acknowledged that the delay in the back pay schedule is due to the significant financial requirements involved.

“We calculated it to be about $35 million, which is roughly the same amount we spend each month on government salaries,” he explained, highlighting the challenge of setting aside such a substantial sum while maintaining routine payroll operations.

The revised timeline indicates that the first installment of back pay will be processed in January, potentially before the next scheduled payment of regular salaries on January 31. The government is working to finalize the logistics and ensure funds are available for both obligations.

Despite the shift in schedule, Hurst assured workers that the government is committed to fulfilling its promise. Updates on the precise dates for back pay disbursement are expected in the coming weeks as efforts to mobilize the required funds continue.

  1. This administration is a damn joke. The ABLP makes all these promises, and then hold the citizens of this country as hostages to so-called back-pay,and then kicks the can down the road.

AND ANTIGUANS KEEP FALLING FOR THIS UTTER CRAP.

I must say, we thoroughly deserve it …

  2. Back pay is an inducement for vote. Ot us to be paid close to an election. Since an elections cannot be called as yet due to the slow voters card upgrade it is pointless to pay back pay. It will be paid at a time closer to the call of an elections. So whenever you have a guarantee that back pay is going to be paid know that elections is also certain. That’s how your heard earned money is being used to control your vote!!!!!!!!

  3. Time for the govt officials to stop getting paid until all back pay has been completed. Dem a live high and ah we cyarn lib good. Dis is a bunch a shit all de way round.

  4. Prime minister Gaston Browne had said that public servants will get a second salary in December. Is that separate and apart from the backpay? Enquiring minds would like to.

  5. This government always mentioning plans before they are finalized to arouse the interest of the people and get our hopes up. I had plans for that money in December now it’s being promised for January if the funds are accumulated.
