Journalist Azara Lavia has turned down an invitation from the United Progressive Party (UPP) to contest the St Paul constituency in the upcoming general elections.

Lavia, a media practitioner at Newsco and founder of Inspire Antigua & Barbuda, confirmed she was approached following the withdrawal of former prospective candidate Wayne Benjamin Marsh. She said she will not enter frontline politics at this time.

“At this time, I am not pursuing any political role. My focus remains on my professional studies and responsibilities, and continued personal and academic development,” she said.

She added that she will continue contributing to national development outside of politics, noting that her future path remains open.

Lavia’s decision leaves the UPP still seeking a replacement candidate for St Paul after Marsh reportedly stepped aside over constitutional requirements related to dual citizenship.

  1. no decent, respectable woman who values herself and other women should be okay with running on the same ticket as that gun toting coward!

  2. Why not have person(s) who are interested come forward and stop picking and choosing, Giselle Isaac? There are people in the constituency of St. Paul who I am sure are more qualified than Azara Lavia. Stop looking down on the people in the constituencies. Look for a person who the people in the constituency want, not what you want. It may be too late to do a survey.

  3. Seems to me the UPP is in a bind but they will still get my vote because I have always voted for the lesser of two evils and it is my opinion the ABLP is the most evil political party anywhere in the Caribbean. Satan can’t live forever

  4. So, how long did UPP have to prepare for this upcoming election? U’re telling me that with so much time to prepare, they’re running around like headless chickens, looking for someone to represent them in St Paul?

This story tells all that is wrong with A&B politics. Is that the way we choose constituency representatives these days? Shouldn’t the representative at least have a track record of working in the constituency, or should we choose representatives based on their physical attributes, or the way they sound on radio?

The UPP has done everything in their power to gift-wrap the election for the ABLP. Gaston Brown must be the luckiest man on earth – he came on the scene when we had no opposition party. Can’t really blame him for the absence of an opposition. He can only beat what is in front of him.

  5. the young lady is right to REJECT UPP and its CESSPOOL OF CORRUPTION, INCOMPETENCE and PISS POOR leaderSHIT

  6. She could eventually change her mind and roll with the ALP. She will just have to become a member and eventual candidate for the UPP and for sure, money offers will flow her way from the Mob Boss. UPP has been the best political party for many years, as it has been the nursery for the ALP.

  7. Rovi, just move to the head of the Class. The ABLP can hardly find a candidate from among their Organization and the Labourites and Gastonites are too dumb to recognize this fact

  8. She would make a good candidate just not for UPP. Very beautiful smart and prominent. But why waste all that on UPP. You better so

  9. She made the right call politics isn’t something you rush into. Respect for staying focused on her growth instead of jumping at the opportunity.

  10. Something as sensitive as politics should be carefully thought of. You have to be mentally, socially and emotionally ready for such a call. I’m glad she didn’t just jump at this opportunity. Personal growth should always come first.

  11. UPP still has time to find a strong candidate, but they need to move quickly if they want to stay competitive in St. Paul.

  12. Karma being played out because of what they did to Joanne Massiah alarmist ten years ago on April 14, 2016, then cemented the process on Feb 14, 2017. What a way to spend Valentine’s Day.
