ASC Responds To Photos Of Damaged Library Roof, Promises Repairs

(PRESS RELEASE)

The Antigua State College’s (ASC) management has been made aware of reports that have
been circulated about the state of the library at the Golden Grove campus and there is great concern about inaccuracies being disseminated.

On Tuesday, 25th June, 2019 a section of concrete, three to four square feet, fell from the
ceiling in the main reading area of the library. Nobody was injured by the falling debris.

Deputy Director of Public Works Wesley James was immediately called to inspect the
premises. It was determined that the incident was caused by the concrete being separated
from the reinforcement over time.

There is no risk of a structural collapse of the building.

After consulting with Principal Hyram Forde, a decision was made to close the affected
section of the library to allow remedial work to be carried out. As a precautionary measure,
a systematic assessment of the library and the rest of the administration building will be
spearheaded by the Ministry of Works.

It should be noted that the Golden Grove campus closes for summer vacation this week
thereby facilitating the necessary remedial work at the main campus with minimal
disruption to its daily operations.

The College’s management will continue to work closely with the Ministries of Education
and Works to ensure that all the necessary corrective measures are taken so as to improve
the quality of the facilities and the overall comfort of students and staff.

  1. I thought the same Public Work’s was at the State College few weeks ago and did a walk through inspection of the entire facilities. What, they didn’t saw any sign of this area was deteriorating or damaged? Are we saying that there are no one at Public Work’s have preventative maintenance skills or knowledge in structural inspection?

  2. YOU GUYS JUST SEE THE WORST IN EVERYTHING WHEN THIS ADMINISTRATION IN POWER. PLEASE TALK ABOUT THE POSITIVES…THE WORLD BOSS IS THE BEST THING EVER HAPPEN TO ANTIGUA.

  3. @Johnny Harris, why don’t you highlight the positives instead of bashing free and frank and fair comments. My comments would have been the same irrespective of administration. We as a people need to speak fairly without being tainted by political color.

    • Completely agree….. unfortunately it’s nearly impossible in this country to have a conversation in which common sense (instead of political colour) preveails
