APUA Urges Patience During Friars Hill Road Power Infrastructure Upgrade
The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) is underway with a significant upgrade to the power infrastructure along Friars Hill Road (FHR), emphasizing the necessity for public patience during the transitional process.
Lyndon Francis, APUA’s Transmission and Distribution Manager, confirmed that the installation of cables along FHR, connecting to the existing substation, is progressing.
This upgrade aims to mitigate storm-related power outages in the area.
Francis anticipates the project’s completion by the end of March, contingent upon a smooth process.
For safety reasons, the substation servicing the area will be temporarily de-energized, necessitating a redirection of approximately 20% of customers to alternative substations. The goal is to minimize disruptions during this period.
The public can expect brief switching intervals, lasting about 15 to 20 minutes on specific days, as the transition unfolds. Francis underscored the importance of these interruptions for the seamless integration of the new infrastructure and assured that efforts would be made to minimize traffic disruptions.
The upcoming de-energization of the Friars Hill substation marks a critical phase in the project. APUA aims to execute the transition with minimal impact on daily activities. While traffic disruptions will be avoided, brief power interruptions during the switching process are inevitable.
“We’re asking the public to bear with us. There will be some power interruptions during the switching, but it’s for a necessary purpose,” emphasized Francis.
As segments of the underground system become operational, APUA acknowledges the patience required during this transition.
The authority emphasizes the long-term benefits of a more robust and resilient power infrastructure for Friars Hill Road.

Burocracy without sense
What unbelievable planning…
APUA undertake this necessary infrastructural upgrade in the height of peak season, rather than May-August when there are minimal cruise ships visiting, Kids are out of school from June, ergo the roads and pressure on FHR businesses is less.
Clearly convenience to the public was not factored in.
Now only now!!!!!after the road works completed
