APUA Activates Storm Readiness Plan Across All Business Units

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has activated its storm readiness measures as the hurricane season intensifies, with all business units fully prepared to maintain essential services and enable rapid restoration following any storm impact.

Chief Executive Officer John Bradshaw convened the Executive Team to review preparedness protocols, confirming that hurricane supplies have been secured and emergency plans finalized across the Electricity, Water, and Telecommunications divisions.

The Electricity Business Unit continues its year-round maintenance of lines and poles, supported by vegetation management and adequate restoration materials.

Customers are reminded to prepare for possible outages caused by strong winds or lightning.

The Water Business Unit has installed standby generators and secured sufficient water storage to ensure continuity of supply after severe weather. Desalination plants may be temporarily shut down to prevent equipment damage and allow for quicker restoration once conditions improve.

The Telecommunications Business Unit has refueled generators and reinforced network equipment at key sites. Customers are advised to disconnect modems and other sensitive devices ahead of any storm.

APUA also issued several safety reminders, urging residents to operate generators safely with proper transfer switches to prevent back-feeding into power lines, avoid downed lines, and store at least a three- to five-day supply of potable water.

During an active storm, crews will not be dispatched until conditions are safe.

Restoration timelines will be announced only after assessments begin, and the overall plan will be guided by updates from the Meteorological Office.

Bradshaw emphasized that the safety of employees and the public remains APUA’s top priority, noting that the electricity network will be closely monitored and may be shut down entirely if storm severity threatens lives or infrastructure.
