Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez of Antigua and Barbuda has participated in a pivotal two-day conference in Saudi Arabia, coinciding with World Tourism Day, which falls on September 27 each year.

Organized by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the conference in Riyadh convened representatives from over 100 member states, including more than 50 tourism ministers.

Fernandez highlighted the importance of the conference for Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism-dependent economy, emphasizing discussions on issues like women in tourism and entrepreneurship.

The goal is to foster collaboration among global tourism leaders and devise plans for sharing ideas and best practices.

The theme for this year’s World Tourism Day is “tourism and green investments,” underscoring the significance of investments for tourism’s recovery and sustainability.

UNWTO has urged governments, financial institutions, development partners, and private sector investors to unite around a new tourism investment strategy.

The focus is on investing in education, sustainable infrastructure, green transformation, and innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for the tourism industry.
