The government of Antigua and Barbuda has outlined plans for a $250 million road improvement project, with Prime Minister Gaston Browne defending the decision to raise license fees as a funding mechanism.

The initiative aims to modernize the country’s road network, addressing long-standing infrastructure issues.

Browne stated that the scale of investment required for durable road construction necessitated additional revenue streams.

He argued that increasing license fees was a practical approach to ensuring sustained road maintenance and upgrades.

“We are making a significant investment to improve the quality of roads across the country,” Browne said.

“This requires sustainable funding, and the increase in license fees is necessary to support the bond required for this initiative.”

The government plans to focus on constructing concrete roads, which are expected to last significantly longer than traditional asphalt surfaces.

Officials have highlighted that improved infrastructure will reduce vehicle maintenance costs, enhance transportation efficiency, and support economic growth.

While some critics have raised concerns over the impact of higher license fees on vehicle owners, Browne has maintained that the long-term benefits outweigh the costs.

The government has also assured the public that funds generated will be allocated directly to infrastructure improvements.

The timeline for the project has yet to be fully detailed, but authorities have indicated that phased implementation will begin in the coming months.

The administration remains confident that the road enhancements will contribute to national development and improve the daily lives of citizens and businesses alike.

  1. Wow! Tarl: For all those years that the motoring public have had to contend with exorbitant registration fees, to drive on subpar roadways without any infrastructure enhancements, and-patchwork maintenance, to be nowinformed that there will be an increase incurred for the same driving privilege across the bord is asinine. This increase should be selective to heavy duty vehicles and, machines which have caused the inherited “British” horse and buggy cart road ways to be so impacted-as to be in the sorry state they are in. The driving public have paid their ransom for the privilege of driving on these moonscape many times over time; and being saddled with the many burden of vehiclecular repairs due the the prevailing conditions: that one would have thought the enormous amount of revenue generated by vehicles registration would have been earmarked for the intended purposes of enhancing and maintenance of that critical infrastructur. Yet it seem the incompetence of the reactionary governance in place, has no vision for the betterment of the people but to infer taxes designed to impact on the financially marginalized strivers; trying to eck out an existence in.a tourism pivoted economy designed for the appeasement of the haves-at the expense of the have-nots. The beg and borrow mentally of governance hoarders must cease; if we are to be desierous of true rational, sustainable national growth that can be manifested on the people for upward mobility: from the governance that should be, or will be for guidance of our destiny.

  2. Instead of spending $1.5 million to fix and maintain the road infrastructure, the govt you voted in now raising the fees to register your vehicles.

Govt is responsible for the maintenance of our roads but the spend our tax dollars on stupid concerts. Time to start suing govt for all damages incurred from the massive potholes due to complete negligence on their part.

You all now really need that free turkey, ham and all the usual rest of the bribes you get every year to vote them back in.
