17

During the 46th CARICOM Heads of Government meeting, Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda updated on the progress of LIAT 2020, the new regional air service.

PM Browne announced a partnership with Nigeria’s Air Peace, estimated at US$80 million.

Air Peace will provide three Embraer E-145 50-seater aircraft by mid-March, joining three sourced from the Caribbean Development Bank and leased by LIAT (1974) Ltd.

Air Peace will also assist in acquiring LIAT (1974) headquarters and initial aircraft.

The plan is to operate LIAT 2020 with six aircraft, three from LIAT (1974) Ltd and three from Air Peace, with the possibility of fleet expansion.

Recruitment for LIAT 2020’s leadership is ongoing, with a focus on acquiring an Air Operations Certificate, contingent upon the airline’s first aircraft acquisition.

PM Browne will meet with the CDB to finalize arrangements for the three planes formerly owned by LIAT (1974) Ltd.

  1. The LIAT (2020) deal is one of the most bogus deals that Antigua would have ever entered into. Here is the short and why?

PM Gastone Browne has changed what he claims to be the deal almost daily except for one aspect.

Antigua owns 30% of the LIAT (2020), and Air Peace owns 70% of LIAT (2020)

Initially Antigua contributes 2 airplanes and Air Peace contributes 2 airplanes.

Along the way it was questioned how Air Peace gets 70%. That don’t make any sense. And amazingly, his distractors have not caught on.

Keep in mind Antigua is taking over $60 million in loans from Carribean Development Bank to cover the two planes that were previously LIAT (1974)

Given it makes since that Air Peace should only get at most 25 to 30 % for the two planes they are bringing to the table. Antigua gets 30% for their portion.

QUESTIONS WERE RAISED WHO GETS THE ADDITIONAL 40 to 45% OWNERSHIP THAT AIR PEACE IS HOLDING THE BAG FOR?

Since then, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has been turning like a pretzel trying to obfuscate the issue.

Ironically, it’s Cleo Athill’s political opponent MP Greene, who was reported to have negotiated the deal.

Minister Chet Greene and PM Gaston Browne, I would think are both basking in the salacious chatter surrounding the issues of Global Bank. Together with his son’s ownership in the DCA Headquarters; as well the distraction of the resignation of Dr. Cleo Athil from the UPP

These events has provided cover to bury the inexplicable ownership of LIAT (2020).

WHO OWNS THE OTHER ALMOST HALF, (50%) OF LIAT (2020)???

It’s time for the UPP to wake up! if they want to be considered a viable Opposition party.

While the other issues are of importance. The LIAT (2020) deal structure is among the most important deal that may go down, in the Gaston Browne’s administration; while the media and the Oppositions are asleep.

  2. Expect ABST to be raised to 20% to cover this administrations catastrophic financial losses when this deal falls apart at the seams within about 18 months.

  3. Expect ABST to be raised to 20% to cover this administrations catastrophic financial losses when this deal falls apart at the seams within about 18 months.

  4. All This money spending. And not a mention of paying the staff their money… just wait till y’all Karma slap you in the face… Gaston BITCH BROWN

  5. @N,
This headline reads: PM Browne Announces US$80 Million Partnership with Air Peace for LIAT 2020.

Your question has merit; answer is readily available in the articles written and pronouncements made in the past by the Prime Minister and The Minister of Foreign Affairs.

It is well known that Antiguans has been preoccupied with and Air Antigua the hundreds of Cameroonians arrivals, as well as their slip away from Antigua. In addition, Antigua has also been taken in with the bogus concept of Compassionate pAntiguans has been preoccupied with the hundreds of Cameroonian’s arrivals as well as their slip away from Antigua.
    Payments.

The Prime Minister has offered up bits and pieces of the LIAT (2020) deal with Air Peace, soon after the Air Antigua fiasco many times; and there is one piece of information that has remained a constant. Antigua get 30% and Air Peace gets 70% of the new LIAT(2020)

Unlike every other matter with the LIAT (2020) which changes from time to time; the breakdown of the ownership of LIAT (2020) never change.

How many times has the date been pushed back?

How many times have loan from Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) changed to $60 million? It was $40 Million; now it is $60 Million.
How many times has it been stated: GOAB is seeking approval from CDB to roll over the loan from LIAT (1974): for the two aircrafts Antigua and Barbuda is putting into the LIAT (2020) deal?

The simple point is: While the information offered by GOAB primarily by the Prime Minister constantly changes; the ownership structure which makes no sense whatsoever never.

Now that the deal structure has been questioned on these comment pages.

The most recent pronouncement is that Air Peace will pay for LIAT(1974) Hanger and terminal building.
Thats like when you get caught with your hands in the cookie jar, the answer is: “You didn’t see my hand. You saw the shadow of my hand.”

If LIAT/Antigua owns the LIAT Hangers and other physical accessories and putting 2 aircrafts how does Antigua and Barbuda only gets 30% ownership?

So now their hands are seen in the cookie jar; that does not stop them from taking out the cookies. The answer most recently is that Air Peace is providing 3 aircrafts.

  6. @ Ivor Biggun,

This deal will not fall apart. And why? Nothing to do with ABST

Those who owns secretly what I believe is 45% of LIAT (2020) will make sure this deal survives, even in the face of SkyHigh ticket prices. They will fight tooth and nails to keep out the competition.

  7. Caribbean People with inter island travel as well as the tourists who uses it as a feeder to get them to their destination; will be paying through their noses to support a secretly held ownership.

If Antigua and Barbuda is brought most of the assets to the deal. No way Air Peace should get 70%.
The question is: who are the Owners of the hidden 45% ownership of the new LIAT (2020)?

Local and Regional Media needs to get to the bottom of this?

  8. @ Mr. C
If Air Peace is a Nigerian scam, wait until you see the ticket prices. Scams always have a cost.

If this deal ever gets off the ground. The ticket prices will have the Eastern Caribbean holding their belly.

Don’t be like the PM to degrade and deflect. Here is the opportunity to raise legitimate questions, and demand rational answers.

  9. Gaston Browne, please make all things that pertains to this matter PUBLIC.Your words are like eating sandpaper. They have no damn substance.

  10. All of you are asking questions for answers you all already know. Who is the hairdresser who does not know one end of an investment land deal holding the shares she has for? Who is the namesake son buying all those lands for and forming all those companies on behalf of? Who are all those big construction managers with all the latest and best equipment fronting for? Who is desperate to get LIAT up and running because a large percentage of the ownership will be his? Who has sleeper shares in WIOC? Who has kneecapped the farmers of the nation by setting up his own farm with government subsidies, water, electricity and market share? Who has the nation’s money stashed all over the place in all kinds of accounts that do not have Antigua’s name on them?
Evil is upon the land because the guardian of our hopes and dreams is more so the boogey man of our tortured lives.

  11. @ Evil is rocking us to sleep

Sometimes one has to keep shouting into the ears of the sleeping beauties for them to wake up and recognize that: The Faith Leaders of our country who should be taking the lead to rid us of the Boogey man are in bed with him.

The Antigua and Barbuda Civil Societies who should be guarding our democracy are at the Boogey Man’s table hustling for the crumbs and to hell with the masses.
