The Antigua and Barbuda Parliament has approved a temporary law, dubbed ‘Sunset Legislation’, to facilitate the successful hosting of the 2024 ICC Cricket World Cup across the Caribbean and the USA.

The legislation will automatically expire after the event, ceasing to be in effect after June 30, 2024.

During a session in Parliament today, Sports Minister Daryll Matthew emphasized the transient nature of the law, designed solely to support the logistics of the upcoming Cricket World Cup.

“This Sunset Legislation will lapse shortly after the event, marking its purpose strictly temporary,” Minister Matthew explained.

The law covers a range of critical provisions from venue preparations to visa and work permit waivers for international participants and staff.

The Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds, along with two additional venues, the Coolidge Cricket Grounds and the historic Antigua Recreation Grounds, have been designated as primary sites for the tournament matches and practice sessions.

The legislation also outlines security measures and restrictions at these venues, ensuring a seamless and secure experience for players, officials, and spectators.

“It’s essential for us to upgrade these venues to international standards, not just for the World Cup, but also to revitalize them as permanent fixtures in our community,” said Minister Matthew.

Significant financial investments exceeding $2 million have been made to bring these venues up to par with international cricket standards. The improvements include refurbishments of player facilities, seating areas, and general infrastructure.

Minister Matthew also highlighted provisions in the legislation to prevent ambush marketing and ensure the protection of the rights of official sponsors and partners. “It’s crucial to support and respect the rights of all stakeholders involved to maintain the integrity of the event,” he stated.

With the ICC Cricket World Cup on the horizon, Antigua and Barbuda are set to showcase their capabilities on a global stage, further establishing their reputation as a premier venue for international cricket.

  4. Antiguan shoppers will contribute their millions in overblown ABST taxes to pay for these neglected white elephant venues to be refurbished. ICC organanizers and their entourages will carry off millions in profits from the vast advertising revenues generated by these events. We don’t stand a chance against these wise guys who rip off the poor man day in and day out.
