Antiguans and Barbudans get set to celebrate 42nd Anniversary of Independence with Church Service and Gala and Awards Dinner

NEW YORK, 23rd October, 2023…Antiguans and Barbudans residing in New York will begin their celebrations of the country’s 42nd Anniversary of Independence this Sunday with a Thanksgiving Service at the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in the Bronx.

The service will be the first of two major activities organised by the Antigua and Barbuda Consulate General in New York to observe an important and significant milestone in the country’s development.

The other event is the Independence Gala and Awards, which will be held this year on Saturday November 18th at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle.

Along with St. Andrew’s parishioners, made up of many Antiguans and Barbudans, the service is expected to bring together a large gathering of nationals from the tristate area to fellowship and give thanks and praise on the occasion of the country’s Independence Anniversary.

The service will be officiated by Rev. Dr. Dave Allen of the Bethel Tabernacle AME Church while the sermon will be preached by Dr. Cheryl White Lewis of Christ Life Bible Church – Worship and Deliverance Centre.

Taking his usual place as organist and choral director is the Very Rev. Belgrave Pelle of the St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Bronx. The service will also be blessed with the melodious sounds of the City South Steel Orchestra & The Antigua & Barbuda International Chorale.

The congregation will also hear the Independence Message from Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne, which will be delivered by Antigua and Barbuda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Walton Aubrey Webson.

Antiguans and Barbudans are encouraged to wear their national colours and be prepared to wave their flags in celebration of the country’s 42nd Independence Anniversary.

“It is an opportune time for reflection and to give thanks for our many blessings to include the favouring mercies of God that allowed us to once again be spared from the impact of a dangerous storm this past weekend,” Ambassador Webson noted.

In addition, this year’s Gala will be focused on our youth in alignment with the 2023 theme of the celebrations – Embracing the Legacy, Shaping the Future.

It will honour and celebrate the work of the Antigua and Barbuda Students Association, whose members have devoted their time and energies to ensuring that students benefit from a seamless transition into their studies while miles away from their homes.

Proceeds from the gala, which will feature the Original Burning Flames, will go towards the Students Association in support of its sterling work in preparing out future leaders for their roles as stewards of our beautiful nation.

Young people who have shown considerable promise in their own academic development and as professionals, will be recognised during the awards segment of the program.
