As the Antigua and Barbuda Progressive Society (ABPS) celebrates its 90th anniversary as a “Lighthouse in Harlem,” the organization has intensified its outreach efforts to help those in need. Acts of kindness, comforting others, and raising awareness remain central to the Society’s mission of service.
Continuing its tradition of giving back, ABPS hosted its Annual Thanksgiving Drive, distributing over 60 care packages to seniors at the Bethany Senior Center and Henry Brooks Senior Center. Supported by corporate sponsors like Wegman’s and Trader Joe’s, along with private donors, this initiative provided essential supplies and heartfelt reminders of care and connection.
“This small but mighty gesture lets seniors know they are not alone,” said ABPS President Mercelle Mason. “We want to remind them they are part of a caring community here in Harlem that values their well-being.”
The Thanksgiving Drive highlights ABPS’s broader mission to uplift underserved groups, foster social connections, and improve lives through financial, emotional, and spiritual support.
A Legacy of Service
Founded in 1934 by 22 Antiguans led by Bishop James P. Roberts, ABPS is the oldest surviving organization of Antiguans and Barbudans. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit headquartered in Harlem, it has preserved its rich heritage while making meaningful contributions to the community for the past 90 years.
ABPS remains grateful to its members, sponsors, and donors for making programs like the Thanksgiving Drive possible. For more information or to support their work, visit abpsociety.org.
