CABINET NOTES:
The Cabinet adopted a policy on the importation of Electric Vehicles (EVs), to commence immediately.
The Minister of Finance is authorized to waive 100% Duty and 100% Environmental Levy on the importation of EVs.
The importer is expected to pay 100% of the ABST and 100% Revenue Recovery Charge (RRC).

Chupzz!!!
What does this mean?
I understand what the government is attempting. however, what I’m not understanding is whether there’s infrastructure in place at the moment, and if not will there be some soon enough for the vehicles.
For instance, I’m aware of the very high cost of electric batteries. A Tesla battery could be as much as US $20,000. Body damage to a Tesla is also very expensive. Therefore, I’m concerned that insurance premiums will be very high.
I’m not sure at the moment, but do we have dealers on the island that can supply support for electric vehicles when they breakdown, or have some other problems?
Also, was consideration taken into account that a persons, bringing in an electric vehicle may not be bringing in a new one, and if the battery, for argument sake, is near it’s life, the vehicle could potentially just end up on the side of our roads.
I fully appreciate the initiative, but I do have some concerns that I didn’t hear in this article.
Come on ABLP, your Prime minister Gaston ‘Living In A Bubble’ Browne has lost the plot.
Can’t you find a more capable person to run the country for the people, and by the people (😉), just like the leadership process that the UPP are rightly conducting at present.
Mek Daryl Matthew’s (not ideal, but he better than Gassssston) run tings until UPP tek over in 2028.
A fool and his money will soon part ways.

FIX THE HOSPITAL
I tend to be critical of the Government; this one has some merit, as well as flows.
We look at the “Keeping up with the Jones” syndrome which causes these gas guzzling vehicles clogging the Antigua roadway as the SIDS conference arrives.
Gaston and his ego need to do something to show we are not demagogues, ranting and railing at international conferences about being fossil fuel and global warming victims, when we are per capita high contributors to global warming.
BTW: Tesla is not the only game. BVD (Chinese) has taken over Tesla as the world largest producers of EVs and they cost much less.
There are EV manufactured in LATAM countries, who produces a vehicle that can take you from English Harbor to Saint Johns and back on a single charge.
In the absence of compatible charging stations, the waiver of 100% Duty and 100% Environmental Levy on the importation of EVs may be meaningless.
EVs don’t run on water or by solar panels; they need consistent dependable supply of electrical power. What will be the restrictions as those previously on solar panels.
It will be interesting to see how the politics of “charging stations” unfolds; for many times a good idea with the policy of Creative Enrichment driving it turns, out to be a costly experiment for Antiguans.
