The government is reviewing legislation to prevent companies from avoiding severance and other financial obligations to employees, according to Prime Minister Gaston Browne.
Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne said changes are being considered to ensure businesses that own and operate major enterprises remain responsible for outstanding staff payments, particularly in cases of liquidation or sale.
The move aims to close loopholes that allow firms to separate assets from their workforce responsibilities, leaving employees vulnerable.
“We will go to Parliament to change the law so that the entity owning the real estate that generates economic activity is ultimately liable for severance and outstanding staff costs,” Browne stated.
The review follows concerns that some businesses in Antigua and Barbuda, particularly in the hospitality sector, have structured their operations in ways that shield them from financial liabilities when ownership changes.
Browne highlighted that companies benefiting from government concessions should also meet their obligations to workers.
Officials are expected to hold consultations before drafting amendments, with the aim of strengthening protections for employees while maintaining a fair business environment.

I hope the review process is thorough and not just political talk. Workers need real action, not just promises.
Ensuring fair severance payments is long overdue. Let’s hope the changes actually benefit workers and don’t get delayed by bureaucracy.
