Antigua to purchase freezers as fewer family members claim their dead relatives

The principal reliance for the disposal of cadavers lies with the two funeral homes–providing the dead are claimed by a family.

When a person dies in the public hospital or on the streets, and the dead is not claimed, the responsibility for burial becomes the taxpayers’.

A larger number of family members are refusing to claim their dead, and the funeral homes do not accept the human remains for storage.

Hence, the Ministry of Health, under whose portfolio falls the Central Board of Health, is seeking to strengthen the storage capability.

A decision was made to purchase freezers that will be placed in the mortuary building at the old Holberton Hospital that can accommodate up to six cadavers.

Autopsies can also be carried out at that building, and on the properties of the funeral home.

  1. I jus want to know why JESSICA BARNES charges so much for a simple burial
The government needs to cap the price of burial

A simple box $12 to 15 thousand dollars???

She dnt even do any work on a body unless it’s high soci ppl she all over the embalming

    Why she charges so much

I think the government should freeze the body until the families can purchase a box

This wicked gyal in COVID period was charging ppl ridiculous amounts of money

  2. It’s high time Antigua mortuaries offer Cremation its high time they have crematoriums …….

A simple cremation in the US cost $1200.00.

This can relieve families who are struggling or who dnt want the financial burden of burying their dead.

It amazes me how ppl have monies to party but no money to bury their dead jus patiently waiting on the government to give $2500.00 to help bury dead …
I think instead of giving that money put it towards storage & cremation of that dead.
So if no one claims their dead that money isn’t released either to anyone.

  3. Lyrically still…

  4. That is not the solution. Go to parliament and hold family member accountable for the burial cost of next of kin. But then again some live overseas and do not care. They will not incur any expense for their loved one. I suggest a body that is not claimed within a certain time frame. Lets say three months or ninety days should be disposed of by the state in an unmarked grave or cremated. The tax payers cannot be saddled with high bill that only benefits Straffie and Barnes.

    • I do not think they have been shamed as yet. Perhaps we need to place their names in the newspaper and on the ABS News and demand them to come and burry their loved ones. Maybe when their names are called or printed people will know who these families are and than perhaps they will feel the shame. But as I said some of them do not live here and don’t give a damn.

  5. I’ve been saying this over the years. ANTIGUA NEEDS TO WAKE UP TO 2024 AND BUILD A CREMATORIUM. The GOVERNMENT is the one holding up the dam process. Cremation is the least expensive way to deal with the deceased. In the USA, California or NY for example and a cremation is just $1’200 to $1, 500 total and if you want a viewing for a day, it’s just $500 to $750 for the embalming and “renting” of a casket for the one day viewing. If anyone in Antigua wants cremation they have to go through the ordeal of sending the body overseas to the USVI , Barbados or St. Lucia which become very expensive and tedious. Again, ANTIGUA, ABLP, BARNES AND STRAFFIE ITS TIME FOR A CREMATORIUM. THIS IS 2024 NOT 1974!!!
