A week has been set aside to focus on the nation’s 16 centenarians – individuals 100 years and older.

For the first time, the Community Development Division in the Ministry of Social Transformation and Human Resource Development will observe Centenarians Week in Antigua and Barbuda.

The June 6 – 9 activities will include interviews with a couple of the centenarians, addresses by government and ministry officials, presentations of gift baskets and the mounting of two billboards highlighting all of the centenarians on the island. June 8th has been earmarked Centenarians Day.

Of the 16 centenarians in Antigua and Barbuda, there are three (3) males and thirteen females. The oldest female is Mrs. Lilian Edwards of Cassada Gardens who is 104 and the eldest male is Mr. Jacob Alexander Turner of Seatons, who is 103 years.

Throughout the years, the staff at the Community Development Division in collaboration with stakeholders, has worked with family members to plan birthday celebrations for these elderly individuals.  The event also includes a visit by the country’s Governor General or his Deputy.

The Community Development Division is commending those businesses that contribute towards making the centenarians’ birthday celebrations and this year’s week of activities a success.
