Antigua Residents Report Shaking

Residents in Antigua reported weak tremors early Saturday morning after a magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck near Gustavia, St. Barthélemy, just after midnight on March 29.

The quake occurred at 12:53 a.m. local time and was recorded at a depth of 98 kilometres, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The United States Geological Survey (USGS) later confirmed the quake and classified the shaking as weak near the epicenter.

Though centred approximately 166 kilometres northwest of St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, the seismic activity was reportedly felt in parts of the island, with several residents describing the shaking as very mild. Early unverified reports of a separate seismic-like event near St. John’s around 4:53 a.m. GMT have also surfaced, but officials are still reviewing data to determine whether this was an aftershock or unrelated tremor.

Nearby areas that may have experienced weak to very weak shaking include Philipsburg, Marigot, The Valley in Anguilla, and Basseterre in St. Kitts and Nevis.

There have been no reports of damage or injuries, but regional monitoring agencies continue to assess seismic activity. Residents who felt the earthquake are encouraged to report their experience using platforms such as the VolcanoDiscovery app to assist in gathering more firsthand data.

Authorities are reminding the public that more updates may be issued as additional information becomes available.
