At COP29 in Baku, Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne voiced strong criticism of the United States, warning that any move to withdraw from the Paris Agreement would be “a retrogressive step.”

Addressing the High Ambition Coalition plenary led by the Marshall Islands, Browne highlighted America’s “moral obligation” to lead on climate action due to its historical emissions, emphasizing that the U.S. “must provide funding to clean up the mess they created.”

He characterized this funding as a form of climate justice, condemning the idea of major polluters abandoning their commitments to vulnerable nations.

Hilda Heine, President of the Marshall Islands, struck a more hopeful tone, expressing her intent to work with the incoming U.S. administration to prioritize the climate crisis.

Leaders from Italy and Albania also joined the call for urgent action, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni urging a phase-out of fossil fuels and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama questioning the summit’s purpose amid continued global inaction.

As Europe considers its next steps, EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra reiterated the EU’s leadership on climate financing, noting the bloc’s substantial contributions and encouraging greater responsibility from all capable nations.

The EU’s role may become even more crucial if the U.S. steps back, as unofficial draft proposals begin to circulate, sparking both debate and anticipation for what a successful COP outcome might entail.

  1. “Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne voiced strong criticism of the United States, warning that any move to withdraw from the Paris Agreement would be a retrogressive step.”

This is why this guy, our Honorable Prime Minister Gaston Browne is the goat with the biggest pair of balls in this hemisphere.

  2. Now here come Trump SLAMMING on everybody, as he shreds climate change and global warming to pieces and send them to space🔃 on a Musk Craft.
You can beg, slam, cry you’re like the lone tree in the forest Gaston.

  3. The jig is up. Can’t sell fresh air no more. When the whole world was paralyzed, not a plane in the sky or a car on the street. How much did the global temperatures fall by? Zero. Big hoax. Gaston get all you can while you can…and fix our road too

  4. Elections have consequences. Trumps return to the White House will have hugely negative effect on climate change action, something that would be concerning to Antigua and Barbuda and all other vulnerable small developing countries that have seen and witnessed these devastating hurricanes from time to time. His victory is a huge roadblock to cutting emissions and raising cash for these vulnerable developing countries. Trump has always been a climate skeptic and often referred to climate change as a scam. His victory is a enormous setback for climate change advocates near and far.
