Antigua and Barbuda’s Economic Surge: Prime Minister Gaston Browne Sets the Record Straight

In a spirited response to a USA Today article that labeled St. Kitts and Nevis as an economic powerhouse, Prime Minister Gaston Browne reaffirmed Antigua and Barbuda’s standing as the burgeoning economic powerhouse of the Caribbean.

The Prime Minister highlighted the significant strides his administration has made in economic development, despite facing substantial challenges.

According to PM Browne, Antigua and Barbuda has not only recovered from setbacks such as Hurricane Irma and the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic but has also shown robust economic growth.

“In the last four years, under my administration, this country has seen significant growth, almost unprecedented. By the end of this year, we will have a $6 billion economy,” Browne asserted, emphasizing the near doubling of the nation’s economy from about $3.2 billion.

Browne pointed out that while St. Kitts and Nevis celebrates a commendable 4% growth, Antigua and Barbuda has been consistently achieving an 8% growth rate annually for the past four years.

He attributed this success to the leadership and policies of his government, which have been instrumental in navigating the country through various crises and achieving substantial economic growth.

The Prime Minister was also critical of the opposition, noting their lack of contribution to the country’s progress. He highlighted historical periods under different administrations that he described as the least productive and compared them unfavorably to the achievements under his leadership.

As the debate over the true economic leader in the Caribbean heats up, Browne’s administration continues to focus on investment and development projects aimed at sustaining growth.

“We’ve attracted investments, and many of these are the result of efforts to establish relationships with different entities in the Middle East since 2014,” Browne noted, underlining his government’s proactive approach to fostering economic expansion.

  1. Until when this so called growth benefits actual Antiguans and Barbudans on the lower end this can be considered a smoke screen. A 6 billion dollar economy with so many people struggling to survive?

    • @ Antigua First

ABLP = an organisation/institution which governs via HEADLINES, to fool the people!
Antigua Newsroom it appears like you have been bought out by the ABLP as your leanings indicate. I do not want to think that you have become a minion like the others.

    • On point!! We cannot see this so called growth!! Poor infrastructure, maintenance of hospitals and other government buildings and so many people living below the poverty line!

All these politicians do is enrich themselves.

  2. Mr. Gaston Clown … please sit down .. Antigua doesn’t have running water, proper roads, the hospital isn’t even functioning due to lack of AC BUT YET YOU WANT TO BE IN THINGS.

    • I was just about to comment on this. Government building is disrepair, leaking building, no water for DAYS, busted up roads… Lol man, I now have to yams my vehicle into the repair shop to work on my suspension

I just did major work on it just LOVE YEAR AGO!

I don’t think Brown the CLOWN really suits and see the state of Antigua. If he does, then there’s no way he’s a true patriot to this land, for the frigging place looks like a ghetto.

I’m tired of all the talk and no action! It frustrates me a lot.

I want the nation to be great, but they’re too much ignorance and underhand things going on to give each and every citizen a fair shake here

    • @ Lenny H, you just stop it, Gaston have everything going for his personal wealth, he has so many property and lands, st Kitts is conflating the issue with this thing of taking care of the country, no! ALP we look about politicians personal wealth.

  3. Don’t blame ANR. They simply printed a ABLP issued Public Relations statement.
They will do the same for the opposition when the Opposition issues PR statements.
In the mean time growth and economic development means nothing when year after year there is economic growth and the poor gets poorer.
Economic success is determined by the economic conditions and sustainability of those on the lower end of the income spectrum.
    Everything roads is hog wash

  4. The reality is ,people in Antigua suffering while you talk about economical growth. I have never seen so many people begging and with mental issues in a so call robust economy . If APUA decide to cut electricity for 2 or 3 months no payment ,Antigua will be in darkness. About 70% of the people paying APUA bills is behind they payments . Poor infrastructure, lack of water, high inflation and financial instability is causing depression on people .

  5. You’re being small minded Mr. PM. Just congratulate St. Kitts and Nevis and move on… Why does this PM always have to fight to prove a point that he is better? That’s small mind mentality. You’re saying that you’re on top, but the place looks otherwise. Fix up the country and let it’s infrastructure speak for itself.

  6. Two things can be true at the same time. The difference is one island is touting its own horn whilst the other has had it bestowed on it by a foreign news outlet.

  7. Of course the PM of Antigua and Barbuda will have a response countering that USA article. He claims 8% growth as opposed to St. Kitts 4%. If that’s correct why did the people of Antigua and Barbuda just had a 14% tax imposed upon them? Where is the compassion like the leader of St. Kitts to offer bonuses to the Antigua and Barbuda people from its CIP Program? I’d
say St. Kitts is surely leading on compassion, and accountability of the government purse. Those are good battles to fight since you’re so competitive Mr. PM. Stop talking and do it.

    • Yes fix up St JOHN’S, FIX THE ROADS, WE NEED WATER IN OUR PIPES EVERY DAY, ELECTRICITY TOO DAMN HIGH, ALL SUPERMARKET AND SHOPS HAVE A DIFFERENT PRICE ON THE GOODS FIX THAT, POOR PEOPLE NEED HELP, WORRY ABOUT EATING THE PROPER FOODS ESPECIALLY FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES AND OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS IS CAUSING DEPRESSION TO PEOPLE ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, FIX THE CLINICS AND HOSPITAL, TELL THE HOTELS TO STOP TREATING THE WORKERS LIKE SLAVES AND PAY THEM PROPERLY, SO MUCH PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY HUNGRY, DO BETTER. Prime minister’s are supposed to be the father of the nation. You are father to all Antiguans and Barbudans behave as such . Every Antiguan and Barbudan should feel the impact of the economic growth you are talking about.

  8. Such contemptuous bravado, rife with elitist semantics from a narcissistic egomaniacal dictatorial-emulator, with oratory platitude of grandeur; to satiate the gullible partisans lemmings of our downtrodden.
lot. And fit for those of the staid reticence inclination with gleam of petty bourgeois fantasy. Such, that would allay and deny my innate ambiguity, as a guilt trip for posturing my sense of the “Alpha Negro” feigning. reality of proactive empathy for the prevailing economic plight, and social entrenchment visited.
upon the mass strivers on the bottom rung of his vaunted economic austerity recovery projection. I, most most certainly would differ my sense of concern, if there was any kind of discernable effects that. trickle down to manifest the. tangible benefit derived from the lauded appeal for power house status: when, even after.
the selfishness attached to the wanton sell off of the people’s Patrimony: inclusive of any and all vesta elevation and waterfront land ; with zeal of profiteering ventures capitalist to enhance self enrichment. And immune to the fact that Capital St. John’s, Tanner. Street and its suburbs still remains the reminder of a Colonial Relic Town in need of relief for a ten years capital enhancement program; for the benefit of even the same partisan-lemmings, clique and cronies that you so valiantly. chirped for: instead of Antiguan 🇦🇬 Barbudan all.

  9. It is good that the PM wishes Antigua to be an economic power house. It’s just that the PEOPLE CANNOT MAKE IT HAPPEN WITH MINIMUM WAGE.

  10. Imagine an article from the USA said what they said about st kitts. Reading the comments it is so sad!! How your own can fight you down for defending the same people who have nothing good to say about you. What the big deal about “USA Today.” People on a whole just badminded. When institutions say good about the country – its economy- and government. You all have nothing good to say! I can bet if it wasn’t for this government. You who commenting with these negative would have been out of job – or be in wrost situation. Let me say this!! UPP was the worst thing ever! happened to this twin island state. Let me say this the upp will never win the next election! You continue to badminded. Get a life!!

    • You are grabbing at straws. Just like your P.M , you have not presented anything to prove that we are not an Economic Poorhouse. During Covid, the ALP Government couldn’t assist the populace ,while the St. Kitts & Nevis Government was taking care of its people and are still helping with a double salary at the end of the year for three consecutive years. The thiefing Lunatic and his acolytes are the only Economic Powerhouses, aided and abetted by idiots like you.

  11. @Gaston Browne, PM…

1…the only ones, #who’re concerned with the USA TODAY Article is you, your Cabinet(you are the entire Cabinet apparently), and your band of #Merry_Maids.

2…you are NOT standing up for anyone, other than and your ego; therefore, here are a few suggestions, to settle your score with the Kittician Government.
A…organized a SPORTS WEEKEND. Have a Cricket Match 20/20. Have a Domino Tournament
A football match (Cutie can play Full Back like Scout from Empire. Just let him know, American Football is not FUTBALL.)
Have a Swimming Meet. A Track Meet(Maria can pretend, she’s Frazier from Jamaica and you can pretend, you’re Bolt).
You can even get Mike Tyson’s Trainer, to train Hurst. His nose needs to be shortened. He’s giving Pinnochio competition.
And don’t forget Sumo Wrestling, ‘cause, this is sure #gold🏅Samantha’s got this.

So, Mr. PM, there you have it! You can have all of the #bragging_rights.
Streaming these events live will certainly bring in revenue!

The People don’t care what USA TODAY rights. Most Antiguans are like the Republicans of Trump’s base.
They treat their politicians like Caesars, Flavians, Popes and Monarchs, and you all use it like a BILAY #Bull_Bud and #Clapwhip.

  12. I am not Antigua by birth, but I have been residing here for over three decades. I have been through the Lester Bird administration, the Baldwin Spencer administration, and now the Gaston Browne administration. I don’t really support no party, even though I vote when election comes around. I have an open mind when it comes to politics in Antigua. I listen to every side of the political hurrah in this country, and having been here for over three decades, I can pick sense from nonsense. And a lot of people who comment on these threads just spew a ton of nonsense just because they are in opposition of the current administration. As I said I don’t support no party, and I agree with the people who says that The PM needs to shut up. I don’t listen to him because he comes across as someone who likes to blow his own horn. But putting politics aside, I cannot agree with all the nay sayings of the opposition. I listen to Observer every day and I am trying to wrap my head around the nonsense and hypocrisy I hear from Jacqui, Paul and Franz, and the people that calls in on those programs. While I agree that this administration has made a lot of blunders, a lot of bad decisions etc etc, there are some good things done and some ongoing things that good and proper that is never made mention by the opposition. In fact the opposition finds faulty in everything period. Forgetting that they were in power previously and had made many blunders also, and many bad decisions too. I think as a people we should stop playing politics and be real. Speak truth to power and don’t be guided by blind political suasion.

  13. more crime than ever, growing poorer families and indiciduals, not sure where is this economic power house coming from.

  14. Antigua GDP 8% and St. Kitts 4%. Why are our people so gullible and cannot band together to support our country in the face of white newspapers and countries trying to put us against each other. But if we must get into the nitty gritty for comparative purposes so that some of you on here can understand St. Kitts is doing well but is nowhere in the class of Antigua. When the CIP is over for them they too will be over. Antigua will still have more revenue streams like UWI , LIAT, WIOC and through more hotel accommodations. A powerhouse has backup generators, St. Kitts has none

  15. ANR posted an article and you under here big vex because the PM replying to an article. What about freedom of the press you upp people normally sing out ???? All ANR did was to carry what was said but unless it has some huge spin or negativity to boost the favour of your party you are “disappointed “? Yall real dargish in truth.

  16. It may not be cool to lie to others, but under certain situations we may understand the reasons for the the lie. But when you lie repeatedly without reason and you believe your own lie, that my friend is a serious mental health challenge.

THE TRUE MEASURE OF AN ECONOMIC POWER HOUSE IS WHEN THE MOST VULNERABLE LIVE LIKE KINGS AND QUEEN, ANY DEPARTURE FROM THIS IS A FALSITY.

A secondary measure of an economic power house is when you do not need to go to a loan shark to pay your bills. And you can pay your own way.

  17. For 10 years this idiot continues to spout his vodoo economics that no one but him and his minions believe.
He wants acalades and applause for doing what? Selling out the country? For looking out for himself and his family?
DAWG, you have raped and plundered this country going from nothing in 2014 to millionaire in 10 years. How? You may get traitors and fools singing for their supper to flatter and applaud you, but the world knows you for what you are.
Why is it so hard to just congratulate SKN and take a page from them?

  18. More Antiguans have migrated to St. Kitts and Nevis than vice versa. No Kittitan want to leave their smooth baby bottom like roads for the make belief smooth roads your wife speaks of

  19. Gaston you should be ashamed, really I think rhat you’re ashamed that is why you had to try an come back with something to say………….Antigua is so far gone that it’s showing, you and your rest guys can’t fix this problem…….Not even the next administration after you can fix antigua problem, gaston you have sink this country to enrich yourself….

  20. Gaston Browne: What is your debt rate to income in ANTIGUA? Your economy is growing by 8 percent.Do you include all of those borrowed loans, into that bloated number?
