Antigua PM Gaston Browne Defends Absence from Jamaica Haiti Crisis Meeting

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, has sought to justify his decision not to attend the recent meeting on the Haiti crisis in Jamaica.

The decision came under scrutiny as Caribbean leaders convened to address the ongoing turmoil in Haiti.

During a Cabinet session where the Haiti crisis was discussed, Prime Minister Browne reiterated his nation’s stance on the matter, stating that Antigua and Barbuda had previously communicated its position at the last meeting of the Heads of Government in Guyana, held during the early days of March 2024.

At the Guyana meeting, Browne emphasized that his country wished to see Haitian Prime Minister Henry resign, highlighting that without his resignation, negotiating a settlement would be challenging.

However, during the subsequent CARICOM meeting in Jamaica, Prime Minister Henry announced his intention to resign upon the formation of a National Council.

Explaining his absence from the Jamaica meeting, Browne clarified to his Cabinet that it is not obligatory for every Prime Minister to be physically present at such gatherings.

He underscored the importance of his views being known and communicated to the body, suggesting that his physical absence did not hinder the dissemination of Antigua and Barbuda’s stance on the Haiti crisis.

Moreover, Browne pointed out the practicality of remaining in Antigua after a week-long absence, implying that his presence in the nation was necessary due to ongoing commitments and responsibilities.

Despite his absence from the Jamaica meeting, Browne assured that Antigua and Barbuda’s participation in ongoing discussions on Haiti would continue.

As the situation in Haiti remains fluid, the engagement and coordination among CARICOM member states continue to be pivotal in seeking a resolution to the enduring challenges facing the Haitian nation.

  1. No one missed him anyway. He never has anything novel or constructive to say at these meetings. He’s always the “dunce element” in the room.

    • “He never has anything novel or constructive to say at these meetings.”
So how come that Henry decided to resign whenour Prime Minister insisted that he must resign. It sure seems that he listened to our PM’s request. Our PM doesn’t waste his time for photo opt. with the US.
They all created the mess in Haiti. The same mess they created in South America when they were backing all these militairy dictators in the name of fighting communist rebels.

  2. In all fairness to Prime Minister Browne, he was the first one with the courage and testicular fortitude to boldly come out and say that PM Henry should go. Since his initial stance, and since PM Henry decision to step down, other leaders seem to be now echoing PM Browne’s stance.
I really do not make anything of PM Browne’s absence from the Jamaica meeting because I don’t think that anything would be accomplished which wasn’t previously discussed and agreed upon. I would like to see what positives has come out of the Jamaican meeting that would make the Haiti situation any clearer and closer to a solution. The Jamaican meeting announced the formation of a Governing Council to run Haiti in the interim which Gangster “Barbeque” and his group has firmly rejected.

    • I THOUGHT WHEN HE SAID THE MAN SHOULD RESIGNED.HE WAS REFERRING TO HIMSELF.FOR IN MY OPINION,HE SHOULD THROW IN THE TOWEL AND SURRENDER NOW. FAILURE!

    • @ Audley
You don’t get it, do you? He does not have enough power to absent himself. He is behaving as if he is a super power. He is looking noticement and his behavior is boorish.
This is going to be bad for us.

    • I think it’s fair audley that Gaston does the same and resign, as he was sane enough to recognize pm Arielle Henry so too he must see himself after defending a bank not paying back customer deposit and he and he wife and son design get rich rental scheme on the Antiguan treasury.

  3. Serious question: What could this out of control, good for absolutely nothing Prime Minister bring to the table regarding resolving the ongoing problems in Haiti🇭🇹?

    #howevericouldbewrong 😉

  4. Mr PM is that your reason for not attending the emergency caricom heads of government meeting in Jamaica? Just because you made your position clear in the last meeting held in Guyana justifies your absence. Mr PM you were needed there to cast your vote in a consensus there as to whether or not PM Henry of Haiti should resign and your input as to forming a Governing Council in the interim to govern Haiti. Your attitude Mr PM is like a rude school boy who chose to scud School. Total disrespect and unstatemanship towards the other caricom leaders!!!!

    • And remember @ The Mirror, UPP members were castigated for not turning up/walking out on Parliament in recent times.

And now look how grave the situation is developing in Haiti 🇭🇹 – and he’s not in attendance?

As you said: “Total disrespect and unstatemanship towards the other caricom leaders!!!”.

  5. With any luck, the same thing that happened in Haiti will happen here too.

Gasston Browne fraid to go Haiti. The gangs can keep his sorry ass there.
