tigua and Barbuda joins the rest of the world in observing the first ever World Food Safety Day on Friday.

An exhibition which was coordinated by the Antigua and Barbuda Bureau of Standards (ABBS), under the leadership of Mrs. Solange Baptiste, was held at Judgement Square, to promote awareness about the importance of food safety and food security.

The Antigua and Barbuda Bureau of Standards (ABBS) is the National Codex Contact Point. World Food Safety Day was implemented by CODEX Alimentarius, an organization which ensures that food standards are met in regards to guidelines for safety, quality and fairness of international trade.

Today’s Exhibition attracted a number of Stakeholders including the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Barbuda Affairs along with the Ministries of Health and Trade.

Sharon Martin, Chief Health Inspector, who inspects itinerant vendors, restaurants, delis and hotels, highlighted the importance of best practices when preparing food.

“It is important to ensure that foods that are being prepared are safe for human consumption. If foods are not properly prepared then we will run into a problem of a food borne disease outbreak” explained Ms. Martin.

Ms. Martin also demonstrated with a display and explained the importance of refraining from using one utensil to share multiple dishes as it contributes to cross contamination and can lead to allergic reactions in some persons.

Also addressed was the importance of inspecting certain goods especially canned goods before purchase.

These goods according to Ms. Martin should be inspected to determine whether or not they are damaged and attention should also be paid to the expiration dates.
Doing so will aid in food safety and limit the instances of food poisoning.
