Member of Parliament Algernon Serpent Watts has raised alarming concerns about the state of healthcare in Antigua, particularly in the context of an upcoming event, the Cricket World Cup.
The MP highlighted the potential risks associated with the lack of preparedness in the healthcare system, emphasizing the dire consequences if an accident were to occur during the large-scale international event.
During a passionate speech, MP Watts expressed his apprehension about the capability of Antigua’s healthcare system to handle emergencies. He pointed out that the island is expecting over 5,000 people for the Cricket World Cup, and the attendees, being from diverse locations, may have the means to seek immediate medical attention elsewhere.
“These guys can jump on a plane and take off and go to Parts Unknown to go get themselves sought out and get the best of the treatments and so on. They don’t care about the SIDS conference that they expect over 5,000 people to come to Antigua. Heaven forbids heaven forbid that half of a percent, half of 1% of those people have an accident in one night,” exclaimed MP Watts.
The MP’s concern revolves around the potential strain on Antigua’s healthcare infrastructure if an accident were to occur during the Cricket World Cup. He emphasized the need for a fully functional hospital and operating theaters to handle emergencies promptly.
“We are very fortunate. I don’t know if any of you would have seen or heard of the run sheet. There’s a run sheet that is put in place for the Cricket World Cup coming here shortly. There are a number of things that have to be in place on the island, one of it is the functional hospital,” he added.
MP Watts urged authorities to address the healthcare shortcomings urgently and suggested notifying the Cricket World Cup organizers about the situation. He questioned whether a message could be sent to reassure them that the citizens in Antigua can manage, hoping to avoid any potential fallout from healthcare emergencies during the event.

The healthcare I’m Antigua is in crisis and the crime minister spent time at his radio station talking about transforming one nation concert into a two day music festival, Gaston clown you’re a fu*king idiot and needs to get out.
Well said your Honourable Algernon Serpent Watts.
Hopefully this government will take notice of what you have eloquently laid out, and the ABLP will make proactive measures for any untoward accidents during the cricket in June.
Making the Holberton Hospital fully functioning during this tournament should be an option.
The ABLP in recent times have been “reactive”, on a raft of issues that have ended up wasting taxpayers money on a whole heap of foolishness, when the country is already massively in debt.
Read Troy’s belly-wrenching plea for clarification. He found out today that the UPP is the Government so he’s calling out to his bosses for help but the Shadow Minister of Health did not respond so Troy is suggesting that the Shadow and some of the Doctors and Nurses be banished to the Cooks Landfill. He couldn’t put a spin on this one
@ Brixtonian: I join with you in commending the MP. The Gov’t needs to put their priorities straight. There is a shortage of medical professionals at our lone hospital, yet young qualified doctors, nurses & medical technicians who have now returned home from their studies cannot get a job at the hospital or within the medical fraternity……… Is it that our Health minister do not care about young people & the nation’s health? PM Browne please look into the state of affairs at SLBMC…. Minister Joseph seems to be losing it. THE YOUNG MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS ARE NEEDED ONBOARD TO HELP RELIEF THE LOAD & STRESS ON THE PRESENT STAFF…….
@Bloddy Bloke. There is not so much a shortage as, the country is overcrowded through ABLP desire to stay in power through the foreign vote-(doubt me if you can) . The problem is, that is all they cared about, so no attempt is made to improve the essential services of the country. Whether it’s Jail, schools, hospital, they all dying from the consequences as stated above.
Once you go to Mounts St Johns it’s a possibility that you won’t come out alive. There is a serious health Crisis here in this Counrty. The Powers that be a more focused on making themselves richer, buying more lands and filling their bank accounts with more money. The Health Care System is crumbling and no one seems to be doing anything meaningful about it.
Is this news? What a clown! I cannot believe this is is what representation looks like? Serpent is an uneducated clown!
@ MAGA in Antigua
No this is not news, as a matter of fact ask TROY IF IT IS?
See, people like you feed from the people’s trough and can afford medical bills, so the state of the health care system in Antigua doesn’t bother you.
FYI, without health we have nothing, AND U N GASTON HAVE TAKEN ALMOST EVERYTHING FROM US U WICKED BASTARDS.

@ MAGA you real name is Troy? If so, I too glad it happened to you. ABLP kiss ass. When the shoe on the other foot, it likka different now.
Do you people realise you are doing more harm than good to the country? Why would you even write this? Are you hoping and praying that the world cup be cancelled and moved to another country? Lord have mercy on us Antiguans.
Am not certain if the MP is confused with the two events which are the Small Islands Development States (SIDS) conference slated in May and expecting 5000 visitors with the Cricket World Cup in June. Any which way both events are expected to attract large numbers of visitors on the island seeing that both events are so close apart. This is a serious concern for the powers that be to address while it is still early!!!
Unless Molwyn Joseph is removed from his position, and the ALP from office, this will only get worst. With the world watching, Antigua will become the laughing stock of the Caribbean. Is there any sense of urgency or purpose? You’d look long and hard to find it.
Well said MP Watts. We all pray God we will NEVER have to go to MSJMC, but this life is full of the unexpected. Millions are collected to maintain and upkeep this facility. Why has it fallen into such mire? Is medical benefits leaking money? Is the Gaston Browne government raping this people’s resource just as ALP raped social security.? Have we forgotten his declaration that 50% of statuary boards dividends are to be turned over to the government? He tried to pull it back, but the man is not trustworthy. Who’s to say he’s still not doing it?
Serpent, your sentiments brought back memories of the world cup stipulations that was incurred upon Holberton Hospital during the 2007 World cup by the ICC … Was the ICC your promptu?
