Antigua Government to increase minimum occupational pension

Antigua and Barbuda’s government has opted to raise the minimum occupational pension for former government employees to $1,000.00 monthly.

Their recent Cabinet report outlines that a “tiered increases to higher earning pensioners will be calculated and paid on a declining percentage.”

Cabinet Spokesperson Lionel Hurst informed the media on Thursday that the previous administration had set the minimum at $800. However, since the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party assumed office in 2014, they increased it by $50.

However, he said “it is still not sufficient” necessitating further augmentation “to ensure that our elderly citizens do not fall into abject poverty.”

He could not provide a precise date for the increase.
