The government of Antigua and Barbuda is considering the development of a dedicated mega yacht facility to expand the country’s tourism sector.

Possible locations for the project include Fort James and Barnacle Point, according to Prime Minister Gaston Browne.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Antigua Cruise Ports’ latest development, Browne said the initiative is part of efforts to attract high-net-worth visitors.

He noted that mega yachts often carry dozens of passengers and crew members who contribute significantly to the local economy.

“Our ambition now is to have additional berthing facilities where we can accommodate luxury ships and increase visitor spending,” Browne said.

“These vessels can carry up to 75 individuals, and their economic contribution is substantial.

We want to ensure that Antigua and Barbuda benefits from this market.”

The government has indicated that it will seek private-sector partnerships to fund and manage the facility, following a similar model to its arrangement with Global Ports Holding for cruise port operations.

The investment is expected to include deep-water berthing, fuel and provisioning services, and luxury amenities.

Tourism industry stakeholders have long advocated for enhanced mega yacht docking facilities, citing the growing popularity of Antigua and Barbuda among yacht owners.

The country hosts international yachting events such as Antigua Sailing Week and the Antigua Charter Yacht Show, positioning it as a key destination for luxury maritime tourism.

The government has yet to announce a timeline or specific investment figures for the project.

However, the proposal signals an effort to diversify Antigua and Barbuda’s tourism sector and attract more high-end travelers.

  1. Hopefully, the project will bring long-term benefits, not just for tourism, but for local businesses too.

  2. I hope this doesn’t lead to neglect of other important areas like supporting local culture and sustainable tourism.

  3. The Government should make the existing Mega Yacht facilities more secure, attractive, and friendly. Start with sidewalks and greening the areas. Address the parking and traffic issues. The National Park Authority is doing a good job and needs support. Whoever it is is that is conceiving this plan, seems not to understand what attracts and sustains the Yachting Industry. Antigua must get its act together with roadworks, sidewalks, utilities, and security.

  4. So, Antigua and Barbuda is aiming to become a superyacht hub with this new mega yacht facility 🛳️. Sounds like a great way to attract more high-end tourists and give the economy a boost. I just hope they keep the environment and locals in mind as they move forward with these plans. Fingers crossed for a win-win situation! 🤞
