Antigua Considers Granting Paternity Leave for Fathers of Government Non-Established Workers

4

The Cabinet is giving serious consideration to a request from the bargaining agent of the Non-Established workers in the Government’s employ, to grant paternity leave to fathers when a new infant is birthed by their wives or live-in girlfriends.

This benefit has already been bestowed on workers in another Government agency, by negotiation.

The short leave is intended to ensure that both mother and child can bond with the father, allowing him to spend more time than usual with the newborn and mother shortly after birth.

The discussion in Cabinet was intense and the examination of the implications was articulated.

  1. Why just for fathers who are married or have live- in girlfriends? This is discrimination against fathers who do not have live-in girlfriends. There are fathers who do not reside with their partners and are committed to their children. Whether live-in or live out, a father is a father. Please go back to the drawing board. FIX IT PLEASE. Were any Social Workers invited to Cabinet on this one? I say no more.

  2. My girlfriend had a C-section in 2018 and my son went into the Nicu. I had to deal with my son for over a week while still taking care of my girlfriend morning, noon and night, while working. It was very taxing on me and I couldn’t get this leave. So I am glad to see progress on this. There are other issues at the hospital where fathers don’t have much rights to do anything.

  3. This is a great idea but ONLY for married men and live in together couples

Bcos let’s be honest most of these young men ain’t have no intentions of gathering their child / ten so what paternity leave they need

You must be working with the government for at least 5 yrs and show proof that YOU will be bonding and taking care of your wife / woman…… in that period 60 days to start off with.

    But overall a great idea
