STATEMENT ON THE 45th INDEPENDENCE OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF DOMINICA

On 3rd November, 1978, the Commonwealth of Dominica became a sovereign and independent State, making it 45 years a youthful democracy, today. Having once been a member of the Leeward Islands confederation, Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda have been very close historically, with enduring family linkages that cause our futures to be bound together.

All of Antigua and Barbuda therefore congratulates the Commonwealth of Dominica upon its many significant achievements during its 45 years of independence, and extends wishes of future successes to the people and Government of Dominica. To her citizens who have made Antigua and Barbuda their home, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda continues to embrace the Dominican diaspora whose members are fully integrated into the Antigua and Barbuda society.

The Commonwealth of Dominica has provided the English-speaking Caribbean with many outstanding leaders during its 45 years, the most outstanding being the Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit—its current Head of Government. The comity that has matured between Dominica and Antigua and Barbuda, in recent years, is maintained by the unrelenting cooperation between both Heads of Government. Air travel, for example, requires collaboration in order to meet the ambitions of both states. Dominica’s commitment to finding solutions to the impasse in air travel is remarkable.

The O.E.C.S. has been provided tremendously talented leadership from the Commonwealth of Dominica with one of its sons having served as the Director General for a significant period. Dominica contributes significantly to the utility and functional cooperation that the O.E.C.S. has achieved. It has always abided its responsibilities and its obligations. The Commonwealth’s contribution to the outstanding work of the Pan American Health Organization, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, was ably led by a citizen of this outstanding island-country.

On behalf of the people and Government of Antigua and Barbuda, the Prime Minister joins in celebrating the 45 years of sovereignty which the Commonwealth of Dominica now enjoys, and wishes its sister-CARICOM State all the very best for the future.
